Scrumpy

Man on the radio said that he went to the chippy and when asked  said 'yes' to salt and vinegar the bloke serving him SPRAYED  some (made up) vinegar on his fish and chips..
What happened to the good old days when you could put your own salt and vinegar on your fish and chips..?
I haven't been to a chippy for years..

Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Like a lot of fast food fish and chips have become expensive.

Certainly since our fishermen have been royally screwed by the abysmal Brexit deal that we were landed with thanks to the remainers delaying tactics.

Energy costs for business are huge thanks to the pursuit  of net zero.

Employment cost and business rates have both risen thanks to a chancellor who lied on her CV about being employed as an economist when she was something in the bank complaints department. Her abilities might have stretched to snotty  tea lady but possibly some sort of manager as she doubtless lied to them too. Certainly not any role actually dealing with customers as she same about as much empathy as Starmer (close enough to zero to not t up register)

Business rates are up partly due to grabbing councils but also in the main down to the tea lady not covering the costs of services that they are obliged to provide.

Is it any wonder that the chip shop owners are trying to cut back on costs. Probably skint patrons were pinching the bottles that used to be on the counter.

Right that's blamed the buggers for the lack of vinegar now what next? May as well make it worth my upcoming 6 months in the pokey for bad mouthing the gits online.

As an aside careful with any use of "illegal" I decided to remove it from the profanity filter unless I get done for concealing any racist criminals here.

Every chippie I've ever been to has put the salt and vinegar on for me.  I've never been to one where you do it yourself.

klondike

Yeah they usually do if the customer looks a bit sus

Dextrous63

It's a fair cop guv. You got me bang to rights.

Alex

I've always had S & V put on by the chip shoveller, never had self service condiments, apart from in Germany.

Raven

Same here, the salt, vinegar, and sauce is on the servers side of the counter.

Both used to be common in these parts. May have changed as it's been a while since I used a chippy on a night out and always had them wrapped with neither so it could be done back home.

I can't remember when I last bought fish & chips either.

However, I don't think I would want them putting the S&V on for me.   How do they know how much we like?
If they smothered it in salt, and soaked it in vinegar,  I don't think I would  be able to eat it.

Dextrous63

Have you ever had chips with gravy with salt and vinegar all put on at once?

No,  certainly not.
They would have 'em back again if they did that to mine.

Just remembered I used to like those mushy peas though.

Must admit, I've never really liked mushy peas.  My wife considers them an essential add-on.  Left to her own devices, she'd have them with a Sunday roast.

Some are nicer than others.
I didn't used to like them if they were a really thick dollop, as if all the liquid had dried up. Not nice.
I've never had them with anything else,  only with fish & chips.

Dextrous63

You ever tried cod roe?

Had it once when I was about 13.  Never again!!

Me neither, but OH does, and also would 🤢

Ages since I've been too, but they usually asked if we want s&v, just as well, because I don't!  Especially not vinegar.  I prefer ketchup or tartare sauce.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖
