I have just read that some council car parks are banning these huge vehicles that many people drive nowadays.
GOOD!

They are a damn nuisance taking up one and a half parking bays,  or parking so close we can barely get our car doors open.

Makes like some Kia's, BMW's, Mercedes, some Teslas, those huge Range Rovers, and Audi A8's  are not going to be able to park in council car parks in Wokingham, South Suffolk, West Devon, and Broadland.

Yippee.   I wish they would do it in ALL car parks, everywhere.  Or failing that,  make bigger bays for them.   :upvote:

Most cars are wider than they used to be.

I don't know if you've ever been in that crappy car park at Kettering hospital but I think even 1960s cars would have had problems there. If they had designed it with 20 less bays they'd have 20 people miffed because they couldn't get a space instead of 100% of people pissed off because it took them umpteen back and forths to get in and out and loads with problems getting into their car when they returned because somebody had parked next to them.

I used to shop in an Aldi that had tsken over and old building. I stopped doing that and went to a newly built Lidl because they had sensible sized parking spots there.

I drive a small car.

There's an underground (free) carpark near here where the spaces are soooo tight! Our car isn't big thank goodness.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

I would never park in a disabled space, but on the odd occasion I've parked in Mum & Child space, so much easier to get my leg out !

Yes, I know what you mean about KGH car park,  it's awful.
Everyone says the same so its not just us.
They built that extra 2-storey bit didn't they,  but I have never used that bit.

I think the upstairs is for staff.

Why don't they just make wider spaces ?
Cars are too wide .
Supermarket car parks always  have spaces in the far reaches we will just have to get off our derrières and walk a bit .
That included overweight young  mothers and their soon to be overweight offspring .
Why should they have spaces right near the store ?

It would be far more sensible to provide wider bays. My Mondeo is two feet longer than many parking bays around here and at 6'2" wide even carefully parked in the middle of the bay if a similar sized car parks in the next bay neither of us can open our doors fully, and with my back problem I really need a fully open door

One of the reasons modern cars are so wide is the need for airbags - those things that could save your life on a crash.

I don't understand what have airbags got to do with size, Michael?
It's an air bag,  they are not the size of marquees, are they.

My car has an airbag,  and it's only a little Fiat Panda.   :hmm:

they are. amongst other locations, inside the doors which means the doors have to be thicker to accommodate them

There are two specific reasons why some people buy very big cars:
- they have a lot to carry;
- they want to look big in front of other people!

I suspect in many cases its the second reason.
Then they find they can't get them in their garages.
