Just been listening to a story on the news in which it said that some patients received "ten times less than they were meant to".

For the life of me, I can't figure out what that means😳🤷🏻♂️

Can someone else?

Bit more context needed. If medication it could mean they were only getting 10% of their intended dose but that sounds unlikely. I recall a story where something like a ten times higher dose of something had been given which proved fatal.

I hated maths at school.. and Mr Ellis the teacher knew it..
He would always dig me out..
I used to see him many times after I left school.. He lived nearby.. He would smile at me... I never did respond with a smile..
To this day I don't like him..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

But is 10% the same as 10 times less?  That's the bit I'm struggling with.

Probably overthinking it.

10% less than £100 is £90, but 10% more than £90 is £99.

That's the logic I'm trying to apply to the news report statement, and am getting into a right old kerfuffle with it🤨

10 times less doesn't really mean anything. I was offering a possible interpretation of an incorrect expression.

Yep, I get that.  Was trying to figure out if there was an actual meaning to it.  Probably just sloppy language.

After all, if ten times more than eg 10mg is 100mg, then ten times less would be either -90mg or -100mg, depending, which deffo doesn't make sense.

The newsreader was that dopey one who fronts Loose Women at times and was also in I'm a Celeb in the same cohort as Matt Hancock.

'Ten times less' = 'one tenth of' in my logic.

I was always rubbish at maths .

Some children received 2mg of morphine instead of 20mg after operations.

Same drug I recalled from the overdose story from years ago. Better 2mg than 200mg. Much better these things were double checked and signed off by both prescriber and whoever administered the dose. They seem to spend all their time completing (presumably CYA) forms anyway so maybe that is done and is how the error was discovered.

Would have been better to have said a tenth or 10% of required dosage, IMHO.

Or, perhaps I'm just too trained in the subject and thus too anal.  🤷🏻♂️

FWIW, I don't think you were rubbish at maths.  I think that you were just given huge chunks of it which really didn't float your boat and which thus knocked your confidence.

As a parallel example- I like certain parts of classical music.  If I was "forced" to listen and study aspects which I absolutely hate and can't get my head round, it'd undermine liking the bits I do like.

That's certainly how I would have put it & maths isn't even my strong subject.
