Shop Lifters

This has become a real headache for shops,  with a 30% increase occuring now.
It is said there are 50 cases an hour in this country now.

I have just read that Tesco is having to put blocks of Cathedral City cheese in security netting because so many were getting nicked.

They say:

"We now live in a society where blocks of cheese need to be wrapped in anti-theft material. I remember when they [supermarkets] started putting anti-theft devices on steaks after lockdown. I thought that was silly, but this is just ridiculous."

My local Co-op started putting raw meat,  mince, casserole beef, etc,  in locked, rigid plastic security containers a little while ago too.

I can understand the staff not wanting to tackle these thieves,  I wouldn't want to get injured either,  but what's to be done I wonder?

Would you approach a shop lifter?

Staff are told not to tackle shoplifters.  So, if they do, they are breaking company policy and liable for disciplinary procedures.

No I bloody wouldn't..
You read about dead heroes.. Too many thugs carrying weapons..
I feel sorry for shop staff .. If I was one I would go and hide in the rest room..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

muddy

I wouldn't either .
How do they steal things ?

In many countries bags are not allowed in shops yoh have to hang them up at the entrance and only fill them when you have paid and are leaving ..

I expect they add something like pillowcases inside jackets or maybe wear bloomers. As nobody stops them perhaps they just fill a basket and walk out without paying. Or a trolley.

Apparently you can shop lift up to £200 worth of goods before being prosecuted .

Yes, I heard  that too, Muddy.
I wonder if a serial thief could take that amount from each shop without being prosecuted then?

klondike

Clearly they could. I expect it isn't all personal use either they will be selling on or stealing to order.

I'm another who wouldn't tackle a shop lifter
Thank you for the days, the days you gave me

There is a feeling of helpless in being old .

Shoplifters are simply adding another layer of expense/tax to us all, since retailers have to lift their prices to cover the losses.

Some bloke just walked into our local shop.. ,picked up some drink and casually walked out again..
I was in the queue at Greggs.. A bloke walked in.. chose a sandwich and strolled out..

Years ago it was just our garden gnomes that got nicked.. Now they have been known to take a whole bloody lawn..

I have been known to pick up a sweet and pop it into my mouth.. from Pick and Mix..
That was years ago in Woolies..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

And one wonders why Woolies went bust?  Congratulations on your contribution to their downfall Scrumpy.😬

I often wonder why, given the increasing availability and use of CCTV cameras, these thieves aren't identified and shamed publicly.  After all, as I pointed out above, we all have to pay extra for our shopping because of them.

Also, shops are allowed to deny access to people if they wish to.  Having a couple of burly fellas on the meet and greet area to eject/prevent undesirables would be useful, and quite probably cost less than the amount lost due to shoplifting (in many cases).

It's time the law was strengthened to protect the innocent.

I predicted the future of crime as far back as the the 1960s when capital punishment was abolished & I've watched my prediction come true, aided considerably by the successive abolition of all corporal punishment & all forms of chastisement for children.
