Look at Macron. Think of the riots. Think of the coronation crowds. Now look at Macron's turnout.

Embarrassment! Champs-Élysées Nearly Empty on WWII Victory Day as Anti-Macron Protests Banned

In the latest embarrassment for Emmanuel Macron, the French President drove down a nearly empty Champs-Elysées on Monday morning as he travelled to the Arc de Triomphe on Victory Day as the public was largely barred from the event over fears that protests against his embattled government would mar the proceedings.
Every year on May 8th, Victory in Europe Day ceremonies are held across the continent to celebrate the official surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945, marking the official end of World War II in Europe.
As opposed to years gone past, the event in Paris on Monday was notably quiet, with a large security perimeter being established around the Champs-Elysées in order to prevent the citizens of France from protesting against President Macron, who enraged the public two months ago when his government controversially passed through a raise to the pension age in the National Assembly without a vote.

Since then, millions of people have protested, and rioted throughout the country. While the beleaguered president — just one year into his second and final term in office — begged the public last month to give him 100 days to prove the worth of his government and to appease the anger, unions and protest groups have vowed to give him "100 days of anger" in return.

Thus, on Monday, Mr Macron travelled down the famed avenue on his way to the Arc de Triomphe in his car, with the windows closed, surrounded by an escort of the Republican Guard, with almost no members of the public lining the streets, Le Figaro reported.

It was a stark contrast to previous years, when multiple presidents, including Macron himself, were apt to greet members of the public and wave to the crowds aligning the Champs-Elysées, no such interactions from the president were seen on Monday.

Reaching the iconic archway — originally commissioned in 1806 following Napoleon Bonaparte's victory at Austerlitz — Macron performed the traditional laying of the wreath and revival of the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier. A moment of silence was then held to honour those who lost their lives during the war.

Seems a bit disrespectful to those who died in the war, especially the "unknown soldier".

I don't want a President.  The tourist industry wouldn't want one either IMO.

David Starkey would make a good president , or Maggie Smith. They would not be boring.

No I don't want a President, the election would probably be fixed

France has a President & 3 times as many visitors as the UK gets.

The US has a President & gets twice the number of visitors that the UK gets.

No.  With the amount of corruption already present in this country, a president would be likely to add to the burden.
From which group of people would the president be selected?  Politicians?  Civil Servants?  The House of Lards?  The Judiciary, perhaps?

As for the first three groups, I don't think I could trust any of them.
The Judiciary?  Well, looking at some of their decisions lately, the country would be a free-for-all among the criminal classes who now seem to be allowed to get away with all but murder.

The Royals have nothing to gain from corruption, being already rich beyond compare, and avoid any part in politics of any description.

There was a rather petulant young man from Republic on TV yesterday, he'd been arrested on Saturday.   One of their issues appears to be inequality. No society is equal, the UK at least has the safety net of social security, unlike so many more places where poverty is desperate for those at the bottom.

I can't see how removing the Royal Family would make our society more equal. Removing or reducing the House of Lords would be more popular perhaps?

The Lords is stuffed with gone to seed politicians and bum lickers of politicians (quite possibly literally in the case of the latter) and is certainly due for reform. Maybe elected like the US Senate and certainly far smaller,

Isn't it remarkable how many "leaders" of governments are despised in their own countries? That don't dare walk about in public? Shouldn't they be popular in a democracy?

It's because they all promise heaven and deliver purgatory.

Had Macron told it like it is and said we can't afford to let people retire at 62 and you'll all have to wait 2 years longer to qualify for a pension he wouldn't have been elected. So he didn't and just did it anyway.

Not because the elections were rigged then. That's a relief.

I'd say two likely reasons.
- A preponderance of 'his countrymen' living in Londonistan.
- The facility for such people to control and collect the votes of others of their own kind, who either cannot read or are under the Imam's thumb.
