as gun laws and punishment for non-federal  crimes are set at state level it is interesting to compare homicide by firearm rate with the relative leniency of the gun laws - last time I looked, but to be fair I haven't checked for quite a while, Wyoming, the least densely populated state after Alaska, had the lowest rate and the most relaxed gun laws - by and large it looks as though firearm homicide rates are highest it the most densely populated states.
