I think this is absolutely horrific.

The Botched Execution of Christa Pike

On September 30, 2026, Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee's death row, survived after executioners administered two full doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital. [1, 2]

  • What Happened: During the execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, witnesses reported that Pike did not lose consciousness normally. Instead, she was seen gasping for air, grunting, and loudly snoring for over an hour after the drugs were injected.
  • The Outcome: Because her heart was still beating and she remained alive, her legal team filed an emergency motion to halt the procedure. Pike was rushed to a Nashville hospital via ambulance to receive life-saving medical care.

*  Unquote.

It  then said on the news that if she is revived in hospital,  the prison will then try a third time to kill her!!!

I have to say I'm not actually against the death penalty but don't different states in the Usa have different methods of execution?
The electric chair has been consigned to history as it's been considered too brutal and barbaric and lethal injections are now the norm.
How can they get it so wrong then?

She's been on Death Row since 1996

In June 2026, Pike challenged the execution protocol, alleging that the state could not guarantee a constitutionally compliant execution. She argued that her thrombocytosis would complicate IV placement and increase her risk of suffering, and that an all‑male execution team would force her to relive past sexual assault trauma.[50]

The authorities obviously dismissed her fears.

That's another thing I will never understand.
If someone is given the death penalty,  why not get on with it within a few days?
Why leave them for 30  bloody years before it is carried out?

There are apparently problems getting the chemicals used from pharmaceutical companies. They created the gas chamber, the lethal injection and the electric chair as high tech (at the time) replacements for hanging which they considered barbaric. The hanging procedure used by the British was humane if you  can consider any execution humane but cruder methods can be slow and very painful.

The more you read about this case the dafter it is ... and it shows the Law up as being an ass.

Apparently Tennessee law only allows two methods of execution.
Lethal injection.
Electrocution.

Having argued against lethal injection for the reasons Alex said her legal team tried to push for Death by Hanging.
The State argued back that they had no hanging equipment or anyone trained in that method of execution.

Add to that ... Pike is a practicisg Buddhist so in  a Catch 22 she can not express a preference in the method of her own execution as she could be interpreted as being complicit in taking her own life'.

It is farcical that someone who broke the Law now twists the Law and who obviously had no moral compass or respect for another's Life now calls upon spirituality to protect her own.

You have thought the Yanks would shoot them. They certainly seem adept at that.

Well I thought our legal system was festooned with half cocked idiots but the USA seems worse.

I can't even begin to imagine what she will feel if she survives,  knowing she has got to face the same thing all over again sometime in the future.    Absolutely crazy.

At least she gets to live a bit longer, unlike her classmate who she tortured and murdered.
