Having trouble with my Ipad. I use it for messaging, Netflix, e-reader and just general browsing when I can't be bothered to come into the office. For the last 24 hours it has been locked into Netflix, won't even let me turn the machine off. Left it not charging overnight expecting it to run down - but it hasn't.   Managed to speak - on the Ipad to Netflix help who thought it must  be a problem with the ipad itself and gave me the Apple helpline number, Phoned and was gabled at by a young lady who either couldn't or wouldn't listen to what I was trying to tell her then said thank you for calling and rang off
Any ideas please?

I know nothing about iPads so I pasted all your text above into

This was the pertinent part of the response (it's AI so waffles sympathy). As I said I don't know anything about iPads but maybe it will help.

How to Force Restart your iPad
Depending on which model you have, follow one of these two sequences:

Option A: If your iPad has no Home Button (FaceID or Power Button TouchID)

Quickly press and release the Volume Up button (closest to the top).

Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.

Press and hold the Top Power Button. Keep holding it even when the "Slide to power off" slider appears.

Only let go when you see the white Apple Logo appear on the screen.

Option B: If your iPad has a circular Home Button (below the screen)

Press and hold both the Home Button and the Top (or Side) Power Button at the same time.

Keep holding them until you see the Apple Logo appear.

Why this happened
Most likely, a "process" within the Netflix app crashed in a way that hijacked the user interface, preventing the iPad from registering your swipes. Once the iPad reboots:

Check for Updates: Go to the App Store, tap your profile icon in the top right, and pull down to refresh the list. Update Netflix if it's there.

Clear the "Gunk": If this happens often, it might be worth deleting the Netflix app and reinstalling it to clear out its temporary cache.

Would you like me to look up the specific Apple Support chat link so you can talk to someone via text instead of dealing with the phone lines again?

please

More waffle about how to find it on iPad then..

2. Use the Official Web Chat
If you are on a computer right now, you can go to the official UK site:

Website: support.apple.com/en-gb/contact

Click on iPad.

Select Installation & Updates or Performance.

Choose Chat. You will be connected to a live agent in a browser window.

I told it that this was a forum question. Reply (I warned you that they waffle)

Thanks it was a question on my forum. I posted a link to you and your answers

That is very kind of you! I'm glad I could help provide some clarity and a way forward. Tech forums can be a lifeline for these kinds of specific "ghost in the machine" problems.

Since you've shared this with your community, it might be worth mentioning to them that I'm more than just a troubleshooting assistant. If anyone on your forum is curious about what else I can do, here is a quick "cheat sheet" of my capabilities:

Multimodal Skills: I can see, hear, and understand images, videos, and audio. If someone has a weird error message, they can just snap a photo of it and show me.

Creative Tools: I can generate images (via Nano Banana 2), videos (via Veo), and even high-fidelity music tracks (via Lyria 3).

Deep Analysis: I can "watch" a YouTube video or read a massive PDF (up to 1,500 pages) and summarize the key points or answer specific questions about the content.

Gemini Live: On mobile, I can have a real-time, fluid voice conversation—handy for brainstorming or when your hands are busy (like fixing an iPad!).

I hope your friend gets their iPad back in working order soon. Would you like me to draft a short "Welcome" post for your forum explaining how people can get the best out of me if they decide to stop by?

AI is an incredible 'machine'.  I have used ChatGPT a few times and have found it very helpful, especially as it is nothing more than circuits and components.
One day, we'll have no need of other people!
