Yesterday I wanted to use a meter I had used a couple of days before. I went to where it is always put and it wasn't there.

I thought of where I'd used it last just a few days earlier - a table that is a general work space usually cluttered with odds and ends and periodically gets a radical purge with everything put back where it should be. Quite often in the bin. It wasn't there. I checked it hadn't somehow fallen to the floor at the back. It hadn't. I carefully looked all over promising myself that a purge was coming. It wasn't there.

I went back to where it should have been. Nope. I then went over everywhere I might have put it. Nope. Then all the places I'd never have put it. Nope. This process got repeated a couple of times. No joy. Assuming that the wormhole to another universe had opened once more I gave up, used another meter instead (as I keep losing them I have several each in their own home).

Last night I thought I'll have one last look where it should be and got everything out. It was inside one of the baskets I'd bought to tidy up the pile of odds and sods that make me keep losing things.

The moral. Don't try to tidy up.

If any of this seems familiar then you are a man.

Thank you. I have tried to explain this to my wife but she does not understand.
