As British nationals (no mention of them being citizens) one or both may be under immigration control? 

Latest report is only one man is being charged.  The 35 year old has been released, after he was found not to have been involved.

The authorities seem to have instructed the media to refer to the ethnic black-African offender as a British man which infers he's a white man.

The 'authorities'?  Yes, the government and civil service, among others.
They are all of one opinion: to rewrite illegal activities in a way to protect our real enemies - the illegal invaders, largely muslim, some of whom have said openly that islam will control the world.
Starting with broken Britain, of course.

When civil war kicks off, we are all on our own.

I don't think you need worry too much about the police not protecting us.

If there is civil unrest in this country I think it is far more likely to be between different racial minority groups (as has already taken place) or when the government gets sick of big protests against them and uses the police against the protesters as they did back in the days of the miners' strike.

In neither of those scenarios are the police going to be trying to protect anybody. They will either be attacking one segment of the population or trying desperately not to get caught between two opposing groups and trying to protect themselves.
