" Did your granddaughters want to bring their parents with them to England  ? " - I am not sure, maybe. Before the Brexit my daughter worked partly in Germany, partly in the UK that's why my granddaughters attended a boarding school in the UK and wanted to study in the UK, too. 
As to life in Germany - it has changed a lot during the last few years, not only because of the migrants, but look around you, crisis, wars, jobs are no longer sure, costs of living increased enormously and people are more aggressive than before.
