As always it is more a matter of luck than a stroke of genius. I aim to cover the alphabet with my initial guesses and work on anagrams from a minimum of 4 knowns or 3 if positions of a couple are known too rather than chase down specific words. Whenever I take an early guess it usually results in a worse score and sometimes even a fail. Rescue forces me away from that obviously but I still resist guessing if I spot there are alternatives.
