What about this idea from a Zoo?

What do you think of this, then?   Discusting and cruel - or a good idea?

A zoo in Denmark is asking pet owners to donate their animals as food for its predators.
The Aalborg Zoo, home to more than 1,500 animals representing 126 species, said it was trying to imitate the 'natural food chain' of the animals housed in its grounds by feeding them 'whole prey' for 'welfare' purposes.

The organisation suggested chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs make up an 'important' part of the diet of its predators, which include tigers, lions and lemurs.
'The animals are gently euthanised by trained staff and are afterwards used as fodder,' the zoo's official Instagram account announced to its 23.7 thousand followers.
'That way, nothing goes to waste - and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and [the] well-being of our predators.'

Why stop at pets?  Why not use certain humans (or body parts)who are surplus to requirements?

Rapists, paedophiles, murderers, terrorists etc.

It'd be a win-win situation.

absolutely! I think the idea is quite, quite awful I can't imagine any responsible pet owner having anything whatsoever to do with it.
Oh, and another thought - if the zoo can't feed its animals properly, it shouldn't bloody well have them!

I can't imagine any loving pet owner wanting their animal used as food.  Awful.

Dextrous63

I'd imagine that most of those pets who might be donated would be old and/or of failing health.

Not really sure of the benefits of feeding sick animals who presumably will be full of barbiturates or whatever chemical is used to euthanise them, to healthy ones.

Alex

Will they really euthanise them ? that should be the owner's worry. :boo:

That'd make it even worse!! Being present while one's pet is put to sleep.  What next?  Being offered the chance to carry the deceased to the relevant carnivore's cage and tossing it in?

Alex

I think you have to be present when your pet is put to sleep, how many vets have said animals are scared and look round searching for their owners who have often sloped off to the waiting room.  What I meant was would they give live animals to their lions and tigers ?

Yes.  This is very true.

Never.. never would I dispose of my pet in this way..
Plenty of people in prisons that could be used for animal feed..
.. and trophy hunters could be live bait for the animals...
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Because we're not allowed to murder humans,  but it seems it's OK to murder pets.

I don't think you do Alex,  well I have certainly never heard of that anyway.
Some people just couldn't cope with that,  others perhaps just don't care enough.

There was only ever one time back in 1974, when I left an animal of mine when their time has come.
It was my dear old horse, and I was in such a state over it, I couldn't handle seeing him suddenly drop, and then dragged away.    A dear and trusted horsey friend of mine advised me not to stay.
He said if I stayed and saw it all,  I would never forget it.   So he stayed with my horse and saw to everything for me.

However, every domestic pet I've had in my life,  I have always stayed with them until its over and they fall asleep in my arms.

Not only would I never let a zoo have my animals.  Anyway, like Alex said,  how does anyone know they wouldn't be fed to the zoo animals alive.    I would certainly never trust them.

My first thought as soon as I read the post.

I was thinking of cats and dogs Mups, watching a horse drop to the floor is something I couldn't face I'm afraid. It may be traumatic for us holding our pet when they're put to sleep, but I go along with the vet's experience on this that it's less stressful for the animal..
