Anyone know about Televisions?

I have got 2 tellies.
I have a little telly on the worktop in the kitchen,  which is the one I watch most,  and a bit bigger one in the living room.

Tonight I was sitting in the living room for a change and suddenly the tele went off.  No bang, or flash or anything strange,  it just went off.
I went out into the kitchen and tried that one and that didn't work either.

I then looked at the trip switches in the big fuse box but they were all 'On.'
Lastly I changed the batteries in the Remote control for the front room telly.
Still nothing.

Next thing I know,  when I tried the kitchen telly again, it worked perfectly,  but the front room one was - and still is - as dead as a Dodo.

Has anyone here got any knowledge of TV's,  or any thoughts of what might have happened please?

This won't help very much but the most common cause for total failure of the modern TV is its power supply fails. Some smaller tv's have an external supply like a laptop computer but most have it as a circuit board inside. This is usually a 12Vdc supply up to 5 amp and startup takes considerable power.

You can test a remote control by watching its output lamp using a digital camera or smartphone, the infra-red output appears as a bright white light.

Occasionally the TV set may appear dead but it's actually working on a source other than TV, such as AV or HDMI, when there is no signal on that source. Many TVs will display "no signal" in this case.

I'd start here by proving the mains socket is live, unplug the TV and plug in again after a few minutes... in the absence of other data.

Yes - rule out lack of mains power and user error.

Oddly there was a similar question on the local Nextdoor and somebody recommended what turned out to be a hard reset which could be found on Youtube. Another common fault with flatscreen TVs is the LED screen lights stop working bur that is a repair shop job. I think most people look at TVs as a disposable appliance these days.

Thank you Ashy, and Klondike.
I changed the fuse in the plug itself yesterday, and tried it in another socket,  but still nothing.

I would have no idea how to test lamps with digital cameras - even if I had one,  but thanks again for trying to help.

I will have to decide now whether to get someone in,  or just replace the tv.

Quick update.
A chap is coming in tomorrow morning to decide if it is worth repairing,  or best to replace it.
I don't really want to have to find the money for a new one if it is just something cheap and simple to put right.
Once I get his opinion, I shall know which way to go.

They don't make things to last these days..
Just replaced my kettle.. Didn't have it long..
Washing machines are not made to last.. They are replaced and updated all the time..

My mum had her copper for donkey's years.. and a mangle...
People want it too easy these days..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Even the expensive brands don't last. That said I've got a Toshiba flat screen that was bought at least 15 years ago. It was a giant at the time but now relegated to a bedroom TV. With energy costs I might set the heating to go low earlier and go to bed and watch it next winter.

This is true, Scrumpy,  but when we've retired and don't have a monthly wage cheque paid in anymore,  sometimes we have to be a bit more careful what we fritter it away on.   Most of mine goes on Vet's bills!

I agree.. I hope it is just a fuse that needs replacing..
Or maybe a loose wire... One can hope..

Well,   being 75,  the telly-man has retired really,  but he said he would have a look for me and arrived lunchtime.    He took the telly away to try and fix it at his house.

Brought it back about hour & half later,  all mended and running beautifully!    I am so happy.
I have forgotten the name of the bit that conked out,  but he said there were four of them and they can sometimes cut out if the power dips.

He said if it does go again,  to ring him and he can put a stronger type on.
Guess how much . . . .  ?

£20 quid.   Bless his old heart.

So, so pleased I hadn't forked out for a new one.

Scrumpy

Hooray..  What a result... So pleased for you..  :yahoo:

Ta  very much everyone, bless ya.

With what I have saved by not buying a new one,  I can buy us all a pint instead.
