I live there. Like most towns boarded up shops, homeless and loud foreign voices gobbing off into phones are what you notice most in the town. Mups lives near but I bet she doesn't take the trip here very often.

Just for you Klondy  but the city does look good if you ignore the back alleys

Yes, I do live near, but not actually in Northampton itself, like you do.
I haven't been right into the town for a very long time, mostly because of the parking.
I used to use the multi-storey,  but those car parks and the lifts down to the shops give me the willies, same with  the Swanspool one in Wellingborough.

As Klondike says though, most towns have gone the same way now, with boarded up shops,  beggars and people sleeping rough, and every other person with a foreign accent,  including in the shops themselves.

As I have got older,  I'm afraid I don't feel as safe on my own any more.

I live in a small town 15 miles from Lincoln & we don't have any real problems, certainly nothing like what's been described on here.

As a city Lincoln is nice too.

I know some will think I am silly, but things like these examples below, bother me.

I remember a long time ago there were a bunch of layabouts lurking in the local multi-storey.
These yobs were stopping people as they got back to their cars.  Their story was they wanted some money as they had been 'protecting'  the car from troublemakers.   I would find that frightening if I was by myself.

I have also heard it has been the same with lifts.  They see a lone woman getting in a lift and quickly get in with her.  They can demand whatever they want, knowing the woman can't get away when she is shut in with him.

This is why I keep out of multi-storey car parks when by myself nowadays.

Solution:
- Get into the car and tell them that you just have to make a quick call before I have a word with them.
- Surreptitiously take a picture of any one of them.
- Call the police and tell them what's happening.
- Delay for a few minutes.
- Drive off.

Police?

I love an optimist.

Ah, but I also have a wild card to play.
Tell the police that they are all white and have been saying some 'hurty words'.   😉

Not really a good idea, JBR.   I can't see that working.
I doubt they would even let you get into the car in the first place,  not until you paid them.
Apart from that,  I wouldn't even dare go near the car,  I would just go and get help instead.
