Like I am sure most of us have felt for a long time,  at last the Police have apparently said they would like to see people under 16 yrs old banned from viewing social media.  They reckon it's fueling crime.

What's taken so long to announce this, when most of us have been saying about the amount of crime,  - especially violent crime -  committed by young people for a long time now?

One Chief Constable has said they are seeing young people acting out violence because they see it online.
Another has said that 20% of terror-related offence arrests last year were children.

A third has said "Tougher rules are a 'No brainer.'

What I would like to know  is . . .  why has it taken so long for this to be decided?  And how could it be enforced,  I wonder?

If the police don't even enforce shoplifting or car theft where will they be getting the resources to enforce that. What sort of penalties would this new crime attract?

It's all talk. They'll do sod all.

Somehow I fear you are quite right.

Given that a mother was arrested/questioned for having the audacity to confiscate her child's iPad for a bit, one cannot but wonder what cloud cuckoo land they live on.

We all know about social media affecting children and (horrific) crimes.. It's been going for years..

Police !!! Who are they ?  I have heard of them but I thought they were dissolved many years ago..

Children are protected and must not be harmed or punished.. A parent does not bring a child up anymore.. No discipline for fear of being brought before the justices..

Children rule.. and they damn well know it..
How quickly they learn their 'rights' but not so education..
 I blame Esther Rantzen...
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

I agree that I haven't seen a police person in person for a very long time, other than on the telly.
I admit, however, that I have seen the occasional police car, but I can't be sure that there are any police persons in them.  It occurs to me that they may be remote controlled from some central location.

I think the police vans are being used to deliver Amazon parcels.

As I said before,  I don't see how this idea could be monitored anyway?

Even if they were taken more notice of at home,  it would not stop them going elsewhere to use another computer, would it.
It's just words.  It'll never happen.

Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

I believe this sort of thing will just go on and on now.
Once it starts, it gives other twisted minds ideas too.

He is in custody..  The police say there is no evidence to show this threat was genuine..
However, I think this teenager is still a threat to society.. Purely for acting in the way that he did..
He certainly isn't normal.. something missing.. and something not very nice in the back of his mind..
They will let him go... Which , in my opinion, is wrong.. he should be locked away from others for a long period of time..
Do this and then see how many threats will be made against others from kids on computers..

This is exactly why crime, and serious crime, is on the increase.  No real punishments; no real deterrent.
Until changes are made, we can expect to see even more such criminal activity.

Insufficient jail space now. Starmer chucked out criminals and filled the freed spaces with folk who said hurty things on Facebook and Twitter.

Exactly.  Yet another example of mismanagement by these so-called politicians, none of whom appear to possess any common sense or, importantly, and ability to manage the country.

Anyone who has been imprisoned for breaking TwoTier's new laws against the freedom of speech should now be released.  That would leave plenty of room for the real law-breakers.  In addition, many more prison places could be created by removing anyone who entered this country illegally either to their own country of birth or, if they refuse to admit that, to a country like Rwanda who will take them for payment, perhaps the £billions TwoTier planned to give to the Chagos Islands!

That's an even more stupid story.

The Chagos Islands are a British Protectorate. As is often the case our forebears treated the original occupants like shite and turfed them all off - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_the_Chagossians#:~:text=ICJ's%20advisory%20opinion.-,2024%20treaty,initial%20period%20of%2099%20years.

It now houses a military base which we lease to the Yanks who are currently stocking it up with B2 stealth bombers with the purpose of getting dumping some bombs coming up to their bang by date on a bunch of rag heads backed by Iran to sod things up in the Middle East or maybe Iran itself. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14582683/us-stealth-bomber-fleet-chagos-iran.html

Anyway some international court apparently with no jurisdiction said we must hand the islands over to Mauritius. Quite why isn't clear as they never belonged to Mauitius but nevertheless the useless Tories started the process of doing that and this was taken over by Labour when the Tories got booted out at the last election and Labour managed to fool 20% of the electorate to believe their BS and vote for them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagos_Archipelago_sovereignty_dispute

The plan was for us to pass on ownership to Mauritius and then for some odd reason to lease the base we had built from them. Labour appear to have agreed an even bigger lease fee as they complained that the original largess was insufficient. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/04/07/mauritius-demands-more-money-chagos-islands-diego-garcia-uk/ It was £9Bn but I believe is heading for £18Bn  :wtf:
