Wasps

Like 'em or loathe them?
Personally I loathe them.

I could hardly believe my eyes this morning, as when I opened the back door a big Queen wasp flew in.   That's a bit early, surely?
Anyway,  I'm afraid I swatted it quick.  I can't relax with a wasp in the same room.

About an hour later,  I stuck my head out the door to check whether my youngest dog was in or out before I left,  and felt a sudden sharp pain in one hand as it rested on the corner of the window sill.  It felt like I had put my hand in some broken glass yet I hadn't seen anything there.

I was in a hurry to get to my hair appointment, but just incase,  I moved the kitchen bin to see if I had knocked something off the window sill.
Good job I looked,  because there was Wasp number 2 on the floor behind the bin.   It must have been on the edge of the window ledge and, not noticing it,  I had put my hand on it and the bugger stung me.
By gum it hurts, doesn't it.

So if/when you get stung,  what do you find soothes it quickest?  Any remedies?
I ran it under the cold tap for a few minutes to take the burning out,  then put some Aloe gel on it,  but it has still taken all day to calm down.
Horrid things.

I find being anaesthetised for a week usually helps.

Veronica nearly died from a wasp sting, and a work colleague did die from one. If I see a wasp, I kill it.
Thank you for the days, the days you gave me

How did you know it was a Queen wasp?

It looked like this and was buzzing the tune "I am what I am"

Vlad

Ah, thank you for that, they are bloody big aren't they? I imagine one of this banging into your window could cause some damage, and their sting would be quite painful I suspect.

I assumed it was a Queen,  because it was bigger than Wasps later in the year,  but I don't think it was quite big enough for a Hornet.
Are Hornet's out yet?   I will have to look that up.

Here you are Vlad,  just found this info,  so looks like they probably were Queen wasps out a little early:

"They come out of hibernation April and May.
Towards the end of March and the beginning of April, a queen wasp will emerge from her hibernation spot to scout new locations, such as bark, bushes, holes, and eaves of structures to form a wasp nest".

I have seen notices recently warning against the Asian hornet which plagues Europe and now may have arrived in the U.K.
it's big and it's sting can be lethal

No problem.  It's only been seen darn sarf.  We Northerners have the benefit of a cold climate.
