I have just heard on the news about nursing staff ill treating an elderly lady..
They were caught on camera by someone in the family who were suspicious..

Bastards.. These people  go into a care jobs knowing that the patient can't fight back....
Don't they realise that they too are going to get old..!!!

What's this all about, Scrumpy?   Have you a bit more info,  or perhaps a link please?

While this abuse of old folks is deplorable,  sadly it is nothing new.  I also suspect it is more prevalent than we know.

In the past, I have seen where family's have been suspicious of a carer and put  small cameras in the rooms,  and caught some wicked abuse going on in some care homes.
The saddest thing is,  in most cases if the person has got dimentia or that sort of problem,  they are often not believed when they try and tell someone.

Alex

Maybe if they paid care workers more then we'd get a better ' type' of carer. :hmm:

Mups it's in The Scottish News, the care home is in Fife.

And what was done about it?

Probably they fined the daughter for breaching the abusers/carers human rights.

Thank you Raven for putting up the link..

It makes me so sad when people are cruel to old ones ..
animals.. children..
These sort of people are in their element working with the vulnerable..
They need a good smacking.. and an electric shock.. high voltage..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

I agree.   It is so wrong, and so sad when this happens, or even if you fear it might be happening.

A lot of these care homes nowadays are owned by people who don't even live in this country.   They just buy it as an investment,  charge the earth for everything,  and pay staff as little as possible to bank more profit.

The CQC   (Care Quality Commission)  is supposed to inspect these places regularly and I believe they have the power to enforce closure.    Not very helpful though if abuse goes on during the night shift.

I think I have said before,  that before I retired I worked at a care home for the elderly.   It was not a nursing home though,  so most of the residents had got all their faculties and just needed help with everyday things like washing/bathing/dressing/laundry and meals.

It was a nice place to be,  lovely gardens they could sit in, activities arranged, fresh cooked meals every day with a lot of the veg from their own garden,  a hairdresser come every week,  and most importantly,  a good Manager.   If the Manager doesn't care about the job, the place will sink.

All the Carers were a good lot -  but,  there was often a difference when we were short staffed and Agency workers came in temporarily.
It often stood out a mile,  those that genuinely cared about the old folks,  and those to who were only in it for a wage packet and with no interest whatsoever.  Entirely different attitude.

My poor old Mum had to go into care for the last few weeks of her life,  and I visited several places to check them out.    I was very, very careful where to choose for her.   The first place I was offered looked posh, but I did not like or trust the Manager one bit,  so wouldn't let Mum go there.   I think it was about the 3rd or 4th  place I checked out before I booked her in.

Sorry,  I'm rambling . . . .

It's every old persons nightmare .

I've seen the inside of several care homes. I have no intention of ever living in one. Regardless of what the care or carers might be like getting plonked in a chair in a lounge where I sit in front of a TV all day soiling my nappies and slobbering does not appeal.

If an elderly person needs help ... they have little choice..

I'm sure that higher wages does not make a nicer person.. Some are born cruel..

We have been looking around locally at care homes for Marge's mother.  There are a couple of very good ones nearby and Marge would be very happy for her mother to live there.
However, Marge's mother is an selfish bugger and flatly refuses to move from her home.  A shame, because it requires Marge to travel miles across the Pennines to see her regularly.

You've hit the nail on the head, Scrumpy.  :upvote:

Caring is either in someone's nature,  or it isn't.
Money won't change that.

Alex

I think paying a Brit £15+ an hour would invite a better carer who wanted to keep their job, rather than employing someone from Somalia at £8 an hour- many of whom can't even speak English.  Racist ? ok.
