I would suggest that the root cause of this now quite common shoplifting is leniency.

Too much trouble to prosecute and punish the criminals, possibly at least partly due to the lack of serious policing.  This in turn may be because of lack of police and perhaps more importantly due to soft leaders in the police.

Shoplifting is just one of the 'new' criminalities (I hesitate to mention the other apparently common problem!), and I believe all criminal acts should be punished properly in order to deter what I believe is an ongoing expansion.

The solution: certainly more prisons and much harder prisons including punishments, even physical.  If nothing is done, I expect this country will become a country unfit for civilised people.

JB, no doubt that the cost-effectiveness of what you propose has been considered, and it's been concluded that it's not worth the financial effort.

Maybe they can't be sued if they've got no money to pay a fine,  and they can't stick 'em in prison if there are no places available.
This is probably why the cops don't bother, and how they get away with it.

As for the £200 worth of stuff they are allowed . .   well that is stupid beyond words.

Hence my proposed solution for those who can pay.

Too expensive to build and staff more prisons?
Six to a cell would be cheaper and would provide more places.
Hard physical work would also be beneficial.
Both would also provide more of a deterrent, just like in the old days.
Taking the easy options and being kind to criminals is doing nothing more than encouraging crime.

To make matters worse, I seem to hear more of 'suspended sentences'!

You saying about being kind to criminals reminded me of an article in yesterday's paper about a foreign bloke who raped a woman in her sleep.

This 41 yr old  man said in court that because he was 'bi-sexual'  he couldn't be deported back to his own country (Jamaica)  because of his sexuality, and violent gangs would beat him up!!!

This was inspite of the Home Office saying they had only ever found that he had only had relationships with women since he arrived here at the age of 18.

The Judge is supposed to have said that even if she ruled he was still dangerous,  he would be allowed to stay here on the basis of his sexuality.

Unbelievable!!!

It's probably a load of lies he came up with to be able to stay here. If I'd been the judge it would have been ......Tough S**t you can take your chances but your going back.
That's why I'd never be able to be a judge, I'm not a softie with criminals, just animals.

It seems totally against him human rights to have the full outcome for his actions awarded to him.  He clearly wanted to be deported, otherwise he wouldn't have done the deed.

The sooner that it is made clear that it is not "us" that punish anyone but rather that individuals themselves who are "sentencing themselves", the better.

My father often used to suggest that a judge should avoid saying "I am sentencing you to..." and instead replace it with "you have thus sentenced yourself to..."

This would clearly place the onus on the offender in a way that they can easily understand and reflect on, and not the state.

What an efficient way of excusing yourself of any crime!
If ever I am convicted of a crime, I shall simply state that I am bisexual.

On the other hand, I am sure that both the courts and the government are determined to fill this country with uncivilised people and criminals, though I have yet to understand why.

Looks like it, doesn't it.
I saw today that every single illegal immigrant  costs the taxpayers £41,000 per year,  and the ones that are in prison  (10,500 of them!)  cost  £60,000 a year.

Perhaps that's why the government decoded tp cut our pension allowance.  :hmm:
Bet they didn't have any of their own income cut though!
