Because it's MULTI culture!  Lots of areas applied, and Bradford won.  Don't forget Hull and Coventry have previously been awarded City of Culture, and they're nowt special either.

A magic display is free for over 60s.  If anyone can make it in April, one of the events is the Black Dyke Mills band. 👍🏽

Quote from: ansu on December 29, 2024, 10:05:23 AMAlex, are you joking In English schoolbooks in Germany they tell us that Braford is one of the problem towns where most of the Asian, Indian and Pakistanian migrants (people) live.
No joke.  I was born and brought up in Bradford, and I know exactly what it's like and has been for many years.
The Pakistanis (they are undoubtedly the majority now) began arriving in around the early to mid-1960s, mainly to work in the woollen mills, and their numbers began to increase exponentially.
Of course, in those days they necessarily learnt English (at least to some level) and even our Yorkshire accent!  Today, of course, I have no idea how well they have 'integrated', in fact I suspect that they have effectively taken over the city by sheer numbers.
As I mentioned, my mother-in-law still lives there and also a few other relatives and friends, most of whom have moved out into the areas as remote from the city as possible.  I certainly avoid going there now!
I don't exaggerate about numbers or proportion of Pakistanis, they are probably the majority, but there have also been immigrants, before the Pakistanis came, mostly from east European countries like Poland, who probably arrived after the second world war.

I hope you're not trying to blame members of my fatherland (Poland) JB.  It's a genetic disorder they have which makes us unable to work with dexterity in damp mills.

Certainly not.  As far as I'm aware, Polish and other East European immigrants following the war have been an asset to the country.  Even better, one of my earlier girlfriends' dad was from that neck of the woods and he was a good bloke... well, at least until I ditched his daughter.  Not sure exactly what nationality he was, but his surname was Wizniak (?sp.)

Britain must recognise its diversity

The Guardian

An impression has been allowed to take root that white people are not only excluded from the making of multicultural Britain but under threat from it...

The real-life dangers of this narrative were writ Large during the riots in 2024.
It is vital that we finally reckon with the fact we are already a deeply multicultural society.

Even if immigration is not a part of your own Immediate family history, the chances are it will soon be part of your children's or grandchildren's story. by virtue of the friends they make or the people they meet and then fall in love with.

We have allowed toxic bigotry to dominate our public debate for too long.
It's time to turn the page (Kieran Connell)

If it's corect what our pupils learn at school Asians etc. prefer marrying people having the same cultural background. Here in Germany the majority of Turks marry a Turk probably because Muslims have to marry a Muslim and I doubt that many Germans are willing to become Muslims and to accept that their children become Muslims. Maybe this will change in the future - I don't know.

I know of at least one muslim christian (nominally at least) couple but I think it is probably not all that common. Multicultural  doesn't sound to me like it means mixing and there is certainly not a lot of that here when it comes to muslims. See plenty of black/white couples though.

A free country but only if you come here by dinghy

Alex

So have I got this right.....  muslims will marry other muslims, Turks will marry other turks, Pakistani marry Pakistani, blacks tend to marry other blacks, but not always.  So how is that multi culturism  ?

Multicultural translates as separate existence with occasional interaction.

I assume that 'multiculturism' is what this country is now based on.  The accommodation of all cultures and colours.  I am not against that per se, and I have friends who are not white.  However, the real turning point is when there are more of 'them' than 'us'.  After that point, this country ceases to be the United Kingdom, and the more non-white people outnumber us white people, the more the United Kingdom becomes less British.

The unfortunate thing is that bearing in mind relative birth rates, the more likely that will happen.
