Scrumpy

Yesterday my daughter Marnie arrived at the drive of my granddaughter..
She turned into the drive and applied the brake.. Alas, the brake was DRIVE..
She shot forward and put her foot on the brake.. In her panic she again hit the DRIVE pedal..

She destroyed a big fence ... gates... shed.. barbecue..  and a delivery of garden paving..
AND she wrote off the motor..
It was her husbands .. She had bought it for his birthday back in July..  Ooop's..

Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Cue Phil discussing automatic transmissions (which all will be when it's BEV only).

Scrumpy's post says it all, in graphic detail, & shows why I'll never have one by choice.

In fact I'd consider stopping driving if I needed to have an automatic.

😳😳😳😳😳

Oh dear.

On the plus side, she's now satisfied the conditions required to become an Audi driver.

I had a similar incident back in the 1990s when I had to use an official car that was an automatic for just one day, but I did the reverse of what 99% of people seem to do.

I was going down the A17 near Spalding & as I approached a roundabout I forgot it was an automatic & pressed the brake pedal like I would the clutch pedal.

The emergency stop from 60mph, with the ensuing smoke from all four tyres, was spectacular.

OMG, Scrumpy!      Is your daughter alright?  Did she hurt herself?

Scrumpy

Marnie didn't hurt herself.. But she was in shock.. and cried a lot..

The first person she phoned was her husband Richard..
He loved his new red motor...

Lovely guy.. Told the 'girls' 'Be nice to Mummy'... 'No jokes... not yet'

Oh dear, main thing is she's ok  :upvote:

GrannyMac

Frightening for her! I'm glad she's ok.  I've never driven an automatic, don't fancy it.

Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

The only way is to pretend that your left leg has been amputated. To be really sure have your left leg amputated. My last two cars have been automatic and I've had no problems. So far.

As Scrumpy's daughter has found out, this issue with automatic cars seems to manifest itself when a rapid decision to brake has to be made & there isn't time to realise what's happening & take action to correct it.

It could have been much worse & I'm just thankful that her grand daughter wasn't in the path of it.

You are so right..
It could have been much worse.. It could have involved a person or an animal..

Material things can be replaced..
I have offered the use of my old banger should any of them need a motor..
My reliable old motor has helped most of my family over the years and she has never let them down..

Our car is 16 years old.  The mileage is just over 40k. We have no off street parking, and although our road is 20mph, not a lot of people seem to know that!

Several were keyed last year, neighbour across was very upset their car is relatively new and expensive.  We weren't too fussed!

.... and nobody will nick an old motor.
My motor is around 22 yrs old..

Don't bet on that. Nobody is going to be putting it on a low loader to ship overseas but old cars are easier to nick than new ones and still have a go pedal which is all joyriders care about.
