Cromwell's death was prededed by the worst storm of the seventeenth century:

'Tossed in a furious hurricane
did Cromwell give up his reign.'

On September 3rd, 1666, the great fire of London was at it's height, and on the same day in 1675, Northampton was 'near burnt down to the ground.'

The fire of London must have been a sight to see..
Houses were built close together .. mainly timber.. 
It did, however destroy rat infested areas.. The people fought the fire with leather buckets filled with water..  No affect whatsoever..

I was not aware of the Northampton fire... 
1829 was the first steam fire engine... Many years later..
