Has anybody heard about fake stamps being used?

I've just seen this today:

*

Royal Mail has introduced a 'fake stamp scanner' that enables you to check whether a stamp is legitimate or not. It will also continue to waive its £5 penalty fee charged to anyone who receives a letter with a fake stamp on it for the time being.

In April 2024, Royal Mail was forced to temporarily drop fees for those receiving letters with fake stamps on them following a rise in people complaining they'd been fined.
It says the use of counterfeit stamps has fallen by around 90% since it introduced barcodes on stamps in 2022.
Royal Mail's new 'fake stamp scanner' is available in its mobile app

You can find the new stamp scanner in the free Royal Mail app. To use it, select 'Stamps', then 'Counterfeit stamp scanner'. The app will use your phone's camera to scan the stamp and tell you whether it's genuine or not.

Am I reading this right?  How can they have the nerve to fine us for receiving a letter with a fake stamp on it?   WE didn't stick the fake on, did we!    What a ruddy nerve.

I'd imagine it's when you have to go and pick up a letter from the post office due to their not being sufficient postage having been paid for it, and subsequently having to pay for the cost.

Had one of those a few years ago.  Turned out it was junk post. :boo: :boo: :boo:

I'm not bothered.. My mail usually goes next door anyway.. Let them pay for it.
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Alex

I had one of those a couple of years ago, it was a card from a friend and she'd bought the stamps on line.

Don't know what Mups is complaining about.  Nobody ever writes to her anyway, and the bailiffs do house calls.  😬😬😬

No,  its nothing to do with 'not enough postage'  Dex.

It is about people selling cheap fake stamps,  usually online,  as Alex just said about.
Hence the scanner the Post Office have brought out.

*(I might have to send you loads of letters with fake stamps on so you have to pay all the fines.
Perhaps THEN, you will realise what I'm on about)!

Do it online!

I avoid the use of snail mail whenever possible.  If it can be done online, then I do it.
AND IT'S FREE!

Next doors mail comes to me .

The postman appears not to be able to tell a one from a two .

Against my will I shove it in their letter box .
