Complete mystery how you get 5/5 most times Ruthio.  It no doubt requires a kind of thinking process that currently eludes me ☹

Best I can do without giving anything away...take today's puzzle...a grid with 5 definites and 16 spares to be moved about, the yellow ones within their lines, giving you indication for your choice of word, and the white ones which can go anywhere.
Make a list of the possible words that you can see. Quite often your first choice will change.
Check the letters of the words you've chosen against the 16 spares, and fiddle around with the possibilities until you've used all 16 spares in your choice of words.
Then and only then you can start swapping letters around. 
Straight swaps are gold!
Then when you've no straight swaps left, look and see how many swaps you've got left.
Say it's 12 and you want to be left with magic 5, then you're limited to only 7 more swaps...
THIS is the clever bit!!
Go through the swaps (I do this on paper) aiming for the least number of moves to get your letters in the right place. This is where you can easily use up more swaps than you need!

Thanks Ruth.  You explained that very completely and I can see how you get five stars most of the time.  The unfortunate thing which puts me off is the time it must take to go through all those options and changes, but you deserve your successes because you are prepared to make the effort.
I keep thinking that I'd look out our Scrabble tiles one day and spend some time following your suggestions.

However, in the meantime, this is all I could manage using the traditional 'guessing method'!
