Why do some seem to  enjoy so much non-stop talk on Hatred, Immigrants, Wars, Politics and Deaths?
We are drowned every day on the Telly,  in newspapers,  on here,  everywhere.

I realise I must be the odd one out, but I don't want to fill my head every day with hatred and atrocities, especially when it won't change the minds of these mad,  power-hungry males who are responsible for it all.

On a less serious note,  I have just broken my glasses, and the lens has dropped out, so now I am in a spot of bother.

Can't you just pop it back in?

Which does open up the possibility of responses involving, meat, large sausages, pork and the butchers big chopper, but I am above such crassness

No,  because the arm bit that goes over my ear has come off the frame, and that is why the lens also dropped out.
I am in trouble, because although I have my distance ones for driving,  it is the bi-foculs I need to walk about with and see what I'm doing.
Just tried Sellotape, and Superglue,  to hold it all back together,  but I shall be lucky if it holds to lunchtime!

Optician can't see me until Friday,  then I will have to wait for new glasses to be made.

I hope you enjoyed yourself Scrumpy,  but don't believe a word he says though.  He just likes to show off his Brisket.

I was also told he was eyeing up Gladys, Emma, and Edith  this morning.
He's worse than a randy old Goat in the breeding season.

Absolute disaster for you Mups.  The ones I have have a design feature/fault of the arms popping off now and again, randomly.  I used to have to put on a spare pair of specs so I could see things clearly enough to repair them.  But now, a bit like trained soldiers and their guns, I can make the repair without looking.

Scrumpy...hope the fella at the meat counter didn't use his big chopper in any dangerous manner.

Mups .. Bloody glasses.. They cost us a bomb..
I have an eye test on Friday.. I need my glasses to be a bit stronger..
I use two pairs.. reading and distance.. I can't get used to Bifocals.. my balance isn't good ...
I always try and keep some spares around..
I go to Vision Express.. I buy my glasses by direct debit.. interest free..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

That's rather unhygienic not to say risky if there were any serving forks and the like out at the time. Better hope the store manager doesn't spot anything.

If the arm came off they are the type where the frame has a gap and the arm is held in with a tiny screw between the two ends which form a hinge.

You can get repair kits such as this although there are others too and the optician may have one.

Worth getting one so you can check the screw is tight from time to time and stop it happening again. If you hadn't used superglue you could probably have repaired them using a screw from the kit.

Yes, the bifocals do take some getting used to,  but on the positive side, it saves me having to keep swapping to another pair of glasses according to what I'm doing.    At least with these I can see distance, and close up too.

How does it work buying from somewhere like Vision Express - or anywhere online?
Do you have to get a prescription for the lenses  from somewhere else first?
And how can you get the size right  without trying them on before you buy?

Thanks Klondike,  but it wasn't quite like that.
It is difficult to explain,  but I know what you mean about that tiny screw at the end of the arm,  and I had tightened that a couple of days ago because that arm kept going out of shape and bending wide - its so hard to explain when I can't show you what I mean -  but it looks like the end of the arm has actually snapped off the glass altogether,  broken,  so that is why I tried the superglue.  Tightening the screw didn't make any difference.

Also, the frame round the lens itself is only at the top bit of glass,  there is no frame round the entire lens.  What there is though -  and I didn't know this myself until the lens fell out - is there is a sort of fine white cotton,  bit like a bit of cat gut,  what sits in a groove right around the lens.

Anyway,  I tried to glue the broken arm joint back to the side of the lens, and held it together with sticky tape too,   but it is very, very touch and go,  it didn't feel adequate at all.
To make it all worse,  the lens itself has also gone discoloured,  looks like a broken rainbow across it.  Gawd knows what's happened there.

After all this messing about,  I looked in the car for my driving glasses, and found something I had fogotten -  my driving glasses are bifocal too.   So after all that fiddling about,  I have a spare pair I can use until I get a new pair made up after all.  I will have to now,  especially as the lens itself has gone like a rainbow too.

Yes,
Yes,  I know what you mean about trying to mend glasses without having any glasses to see what you're doing, Dex!   It's a pain, isn't it.

I will have a look at that tomorrow, JBR,   and thanks.

Worth having a cheap pair of reading glasses as a spares too. Boots ones aren't bad and used to be about a fiver but likely more now.

I tried varifocals but as I don't wear glasses all the time it took ages to get used to them.

I do wear glasses for driving but only really need them for night driving as I can pass the number plate at 20m without any but have issues with all the lights at night in town.

I don't need any for reading or on the laptop but do if I want to do any intricate jobs but have trouble with delicate work these days anyway after all my problems with dupuytrens.

Day to day I  don't wear any and put up with less than perfect distance vision. If i need sunglasses I wear the bifocal polarised ones from my previous prescription with was almost unchanged I use them when fishing too as they remove glare from the water

GrannyMac

I've worn glasses since my teens, a short foray into contacts (hard ones) didn't last long.  I wear varifocals for convenience, my distance vision isn't good, so I always wear them when I leave the house.  I really don't need them for reading, I'm using my iPad now without glasses, but if I put the TV on, I need them.   I have prescription sunglasses too, i was advised to after eye surgery a few years ago.

We have a local Specsavers, I'm quite happy with their service.  I always hang on to my last pair as a spare, my prescription doesn't vary much.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

It's like I said to Scrumpy,  if I kept some lenses but just wanted to change a broken frame,  if I chose some frames from somewhere online,  how do I know if my lenses would fit in them as there are all different shaped lenses.

Y'see that idea really appeals to me, but would I be able to locate the WD40 😅
