Any idea how this pump works?  I can't see any steam🤷🏻♂️

Hope the link works (can't find an alternative YouTube clip nor any other way to post it, sorry)

Don't know what that is, Dex?

Couldn't see anything without doing some kind of puzzle  for verification.  I didn't want to go along with that because I wasn't sure what I was getting into?

Sooo hot tonight.

There are no storms forecast,  but it sure  does feel like it.   Creepily still, not a breath of air.
It's not going to be easy sleeping tonight..

I have just seen London is now on an Amber alert for heat.

. . .  and it's going to be hotter still tomorrow.

Okey dokey.  I'll try to find another video of it tomorrow to keep things safer.

If you want to know technically how they work search Stirling engine on Wikipedia. There are many different types and they all just rely on heat difference either side of a piston. Some run just by standing them on a cup of tea and others just from sunlight heating their black piston

That one needs more heat and the practical way it works is to put some meths in the pot under the cylinder and light the wick

Thanks.  Have never heard of that.

Edit- had a Quick Look. Still a mystery but will try again tomorrow when the gin's worn off🥹.  Thanks again klondy

Good morning all.
We must have had a few spots of rain during the night,  as my plant leaves are all wet.   Supposed to be  34°  today.  Phew . .

I've got to take my new padlock key back this morning. Timpson's cut me a spare but it won't turn the lock, so it'll have to go back.  The woman on the phone said to take the padlock with me.
Bet no one else has got such an exciting day planned.

Today, I'm going to be very lazy indeed.  So much so that I'm not going to make any effort to partake in wasting my own time.  Instead, I intend to watch other people waste their's.😬

The price Timpson charge for keys these days you could have got a new padlock with at least two keys and sometimes more.

Here's another engine type. I remembered if uploaded a video of it. This one is called a flame licker because it does just that. A little valve right up close to the flame opens as the piston starts to recede and sucks in hot gas. It cools in the cylinder which then makes it suck the piston back. This one only runs a few minutes before it gets too hot to cool the gas so it stops.

Requires a fair bit of maintenance and fiddling to make it work as it gets coked up. Getting the timing correct is essential.

It says in the video comments that I would be returning it but I certainly still have it somewhere so must have changed my mind. Haven't played with it in ages. May get it out and try again but then again probably won't.

They charged me £9,  but it just would not work.

Took it back today, and it was the same woman as yesterday.  She didn't say much,  just tried the key in the padlock I took with me,  and she couldn't make it work either.
She took it to her machine and starting sanding bits off it,  tried it in the lock again  - still didn't work!

Eventually after her waggling it about a lot,  it worked, and she seemed satisfied it was OK.
I said let me try it, as its me that's got to use it,  but when I tried,  it wouldn't open the lock again.

She kept telling me to 'waggle it about side to side'  but I said you shouldn't have to.  It should go in the lock smoothly, and when turned, the lock should open without having to jiggle it about all the time.

In the end, she went off and made me another new key for free.  This one is much better.
I am glad I stuck to my guns,  because that first one wasn't right and I felt she was trying it on.

Dextrous63

That's a weird machine klondy.

Mups, glad you got it sorted.  Was told by a locksmith never to squirt wd40 into locks for some reason.
