How do you know it was a moth pupa? Biggest moth I'm aware of in UK is that one with the "eyes" on the wings which goes to about a 3" wingspan.

Searching on that basis threw this up...

'Cos I looked it up.  It was just like the one below.

I saw one of those big brown Hawkmoth caterpillars you posted,   when I was going along a cart track with my dogs last year.
It was huge and had the big eyes.    I didn't know what it was as I had never seen anything like it before,  so looked it up when I got home.
I wish I could show you the picture of this big brown pupa thingy,  but I can't post it.
