On the Telly, Radio and in the Papers they are saying that people will die if they don't put on their heating.  :hmm:
Up untill 25 years ago I didn't have central heating, nor did a lot of others. We all managed and it didn't affect our health just heating the living room. I still prefer a cool bedroom. Are people so blooming soft now or is it scaremongering by the media...... Again.

You had your heating on. The difference being you only heated one room. Still possible now but with a radiant fire of some sort you can sit up close to it and a fair portion will go to heating you. Not so easy with a ch radiator plus they usually sit under windows and you maybe want to watch TV.

I notice a lot of people having loft extensions and they are taking their chimneys out. They will not have the choice of an open fire in future.

Before I moved home after my divorce 22 years ago, We only had a gas fire in the living room. No radiators anywhere in the house. When I moved to my smaller house there were electric storage heaters. They got turned off sharpish when I realised how expensive they were to use. So once again I was back to a gas fire in the living room. No central heating in the house I grew up in either, open fires in the living room and the kitchen.
I also think we were healthier for it.

You were certainly colder for it

Our new-build house in 2014 only has central heating, there is no other form of heating except for plug-in portable heaters.

The bathroom is my worry !  I need to have the bathroom warm so the central heating goes on.

We're exactly the same Alex, and its the coldest room in the house! Heating will be going on, just for less time during the day.  We have a rarely used gas fire, we might try that as an alternative to the heating too see how it compares.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

Try a small halogen heater for the bathroom, it'll get it up to a decent temperature in a few minutes.

Never in my worst nightmares did I ever think I'd be having a discussion about cutting down on heating after living through the 1970s.

Nor me! Apart from one gas fire in the small lounge, every room has individual electric heaters, so I can heat as many, or as few, rooms as I wish - never thought of that as a possible advantage before!

I've always thought it wasn't safe to have an electric heater of any kind in a bathroom ?

I think it's ok if your not having a bath or a shower.

use the heater to warm the room - then turn it off before bathing/showering - not difficult

So long as you have an extension lead. No sockets in bathrooms.
