Presumably in an attempt to reduce the chances of power cuts this winter.

Meanwhile our government are hoping that their astute reduction of pension increases from the manifesto promised  triple lock rate of 8% to 3% may see enough oldies killed off from either starvation or hypothermia to achieve the same end.

A link in the article seems to have put an end to the myth that prices won't be shooting up in France as their electricty prices have risen 1,000% from 85 Euros to 850 Euros per mWh since 2021.

Worth bearing in mind that a good half of Germany was for many years intrinsically  linked to the Soviet Union and understandably took most of its gas and fuel from the eastern bloc, and that's where the pipelines go. 

It's a political decision to buy less from Russian companies, there is no actual shortage.
