Scrumpy

We have sunshine here.. and it's free..

Some parts of Spain are protesting about tourist over-running their country..
I can understand how they feel.. We have the same problem here.. only we call them immigrants..

The Brits , over the years , have bought much property in Spain that they are driving the locals out..
The prices rise and many locals can not afford to buy ...
There are some beautiful places in Spain.. Spoiled by drunken yobs from the UK..
It must be said that many tourist (mainly the young groups) do not know how to behave when visiting a county that belongs to another..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Exactly the same has happened in Cornwall too, and even Raven has said about the 'Camper Van season.'
The Cornish people complain about all the tourists invading them,  especially those that buy up all the properties there.

I can see their point in a way when people buy up properties to use as their holiday homes, or to rent out.   These properties may only be used a couple of times a year and the rest of the time they stand empty,  but the locals need somewhere to live permanently and can't get anyting.

I also agree with you Scrumps,  about the drunken yobs behaviour abroad.   They only care about themselves,  not a thought for wrecking anyone else's evening out.
From what I've seen in the newspapers,  the UK  younger people have earned themselves quite a notorious reputation for their boozy behaviour and trouble-making when they are abroad with their equally silly mates.
I don't know the answer though.

I went to Cornwall a couple of years ago and was supremely underwhelmed .
It's nice when the sun shines dire in the rain
We stated at a dog friendly hotel in Polperro.
There were loads of holiday cottages there .
But they were tiny ok for a week or two but I cannot imagine a family living in one .
Everything was very expensive and the public toilets were either closed or charged
But if no tourists  went to these places they would be weeping because  of lack of income .

Tourist are fine and do bring money into many an area that (dies) in the winter..
But the problem is when those from ANOTHER country buy local properties that (locals) are unable to purchase..

It isn't just another country unless you consider JBR's Londonistan another country which it pretty much is for several reasons.

Whether we like it or not.. London is part of the UK...

My point was that it isn't foreigners buying second homes as you suggested that cause this problem although a small part could be it is far wider.

It has been a perpetual moan of holiday destinations that second homes are being bought by people from more affluent parts of the UK pushing house prices beyond affordability for children born in those places. That predates the mass immigration which is doing the same to prices all over the UK.

Scrumpy

The Spanish are protesting against foreigners.. which include Brits, buying property in their country..

I am aware that it goes on in our own country.. By our own people...
I know that many (second) homes are purchased in desirable places which makes them unaffordable and unattainable by the locals..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

I don't know what the fix is. No wonder the younger generation thinks they are getting a very rough deal.

Raven

We have always had a tourist season up here, but they mostly stayed in holiday cottages or B&B. Those that came in motorhomes or with caravans stayed in the proper Sites and it was fine.
The problem started during Covid when people were coming up here with motor homes to isolate, that got stopped PDQ I can tell you. But somehow things are out of hand with huge invasions of very entitled people in huge motor homes who think they can do the hell what they want. It's all going to end in tears I've no doubt about that.
