Quote from: ansu on June 27, 2024, 01:10:14 PMThe German - that's me and as I told you earlier our English teacher always told us that the English voting system, i.e. only having 2 parties, is much better than ours with a variety of political parties.
What's astonishing for me is that new political parties, for instance the Liberal one, don't have a chance in participating in government.
I'll offer a doubtless biased explanation....

There are few new parties in the upcoming election...

Labour founded in 1900
Conservative founded in 1834
Liberal Democrats founded 1988 but that was a merger of the Liberal party (1849) and and offshoot group from the Labour party
The Official Monster Raving Loony Party founded 1982 but so far have always been seatless.

There are at least three far left parties standing

Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition founded 2010
Workers Party of Great Britain founded 2019 (George Galloway) who held the Rochdale seat until parliament was dissolved for the election.
The Green Party founded 1990
Plus Jeremy Corbyn chucked out of Labour but retained his Islington North seat and is re-standing.

In my constituency I also have the chance to vote for the Climate Party (2022) who are the newest. I'm not sure where else they plan to lose their deposits.

Two Nationalist parties Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru (Wales) plus a couple for Northern Ireland whose Nationalist parties refuse to participate in the Westminster parliament while the Unionists tend to stand by the Conservative Party whose fuller name is Conservative and Unionist Party

Last but not least The Reform Party which is a rebrand of The Brexit Party founded 2018

Of the new parties the only one predicted to win any seats is The Reform Party who will probably have the second highest number of votes cast for them but thanks to our First Past the Post will end up with less seats than the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats unless an absolute miracle occurs that will cause a meltdown of our politically entrenched media - some right wing newspapers but all the TV lot apart from GBNews are left wing luvvies (BBC included).

As almost always in our system one of the two major parties with less than half of the votes (predicted to be labour this time with around 40%) will command a majority (predicted 450/620) and what the rest want is pretty much ignored.

Still think First Past The Post is a fair or good system?

Alex no more 'inherited peers' hand downers can be appointed. This disgustingly anarchic right, now goes when they do! There are also no more 'forever peers' being created, only 'life peerages'.

£353 squids a day plus expenses! Like being paid to go to the Pub, which is all 2/3rds of them ever do. But such a handy dumping bin for problematic ex MPs or those needing a 'bung' to shut up; that Starmer will doubtlessly keep it going, much to the chagrin of his 'left hookers'.

Presently there are;

821 members, 241 are women 580 men. 665 life peers of which the Tories have 275 and Labour 171 with the Liberal cockroaches coming in with a mere 79. there are also 90 hereditaries, 25 Bishops! and 4 'Judicial'.Up to 37 are presently disqualified for doing such things as missing their tena-pants completely and not bringing 'change nappies' with them, which ruins the green leather.

So expect Ed 'Post Office' Davey to be a busy boy getting his 'wokist's' up there to achieve a bit of 'levelling up', if heaven forbid he becomes the leader of the opposition. Same thing for Starmer. Imagine the first dump could be Dawn Abbott as a life peer, to get rid of her, so she can sleep on the Lords benches rather than the commons ...

I can't add up Cass, but if only half of those 821 members 'clock in' for an hour on Monday, that's about £140.000 tax payer's money gone faster than you can ask who farted !

Excellent and no-doubt very accurate description!  🤣  Well-said.

Alex the real number is £62,807 a day (say 420 members x £153 'clocking on fee) but their 'expenses' rail fares 1st class - food and drink etc makes that look modest I'm reliably told!  Dawn Abbott and her 'mate' Jeremy Corbyn will be amongst Starmer's first appointee's to the 'upstairs. Thats as long as the latter loses out to the official Labour candidate in Islington North Thursday though?

Did I hear someone say Abbott?...

Quote from: 1955vintage on June 21, 2024, 09:40:35 AMAnything that gives Lib Dems seats is wrong. Their coalition under Clegg is the root of many of our problems. This pillock Davey is just as bad, he would do tot he country what he did to postmasters when he was in Governent
Totally agree 🙁

Well I've decided to vote Green tomorrow.  They are for scrapping university fees and bringing back grants, stop airport expansion plans, nationalise water, energy, railways, big investment in the NHS.  At least I will be voting for something I care about - a party that cares about the environment, nature and our planet.   My vote won't make much difference because I'm in a Labour stronghold, but at least I will have voted.

GrannyMac

Our nearest airport closed a couple of years ago - all down to the Peel Group, who own the land.  A huge movement to get it open again is looking very promising.  An ex RAF base, with one of the longest runways in Europe, it attracted new business/investment, much needed in South Yorkshire.  The closure meant the loss of around 800 jobs, in an area of high unemployment.

The Conservative MP, plus the Labour Mayor for Doncaster, and the South Yorks Combined Mayoral Authority (Labour) have worked hard to reopen it, with the government awarding £30million in support.  Sadly the Green party wasn't in support of its reopening.

I don't support any party, but I couldn't vote Green.  I've spoiled my paper (first time ever)  because we don't have a Reform candidate, but if I lived in the Airport constituency I'd have maybe voted Tory.   Purely on the basis of his support for the airport.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

Read this today. Good advice...

In Britain and in France we have elections this week, in the USA this year. Don't just vote against the other lot. Vote for something. For what or whom would you sail across the Channel and risk your life under fire?

If you believe that your current representative truly has your best interests at heart vote for her or him.

In the U.K., if you believe in transgender activism vote Green.

If you want sharia law vote for the Worker's Party.

If you want reform, vote Reform.

Have a good vote.
