I liked The King's Speech, I thought Colin Firth was excellent as George VI.  😏

Quote from: ansu on December 29, 2023, 11:03:03 AMWhen I was on a holiday in Scotland many years ago I was astonished to notice that the Scots didn't like Charles III at all, but now I am surprised to see that the English don't like him either.
The Scots don't like the institution of the monarchy because they long for an independent Scotland. At least some do. Not a majority though as the had a referendum and voted to stay in the UK.

Some English don't like the institution of the monarchy either and would prefer we didn't have one. Presumably that means they want an elected head of state.

Some English don't like Charles as a person for a variety of reasons. He does make his opinions clear and some dislike those opinions. Some have not forgiven him for marrying an impressionable young girl for the apparently sole purpose of producing heirs as the object of his affections was already married and convention dictated at the time that as monarch and head of the Church he could not marry a divorcee. Like Henry VIII he eventually got round the religious inconvenience.

There must be many who prefer the institution of the monarchy to yet another politician yet still have little love for Charles as a person.

Personally I've no feelings about Charles good or bad. He's there and that's that. I have to like it or lump it.

I'm a member of Republic & although I won't see it, the monarchy will cease at some point as support for it is declining year on year.

Not quite sure why the results are greater that 100% but the most important factor is the once the over 50's are gone, support for the Monarchy will drop rapidly.

We wouldn't need an additional President, we'd just need to rename our PM as President.

Do that and the public don't vote for the president directly while most places they do. The PM is made PM by the members of his party or as we have seen recently just MPs and even more recently by unknown men in grey suits.

If there is no directly elected president it isn't that much different from a monarchy other than the loss of continuity. Places that do have continuity and an elected president are usually known as dictatorships.

A constitutional monarch has no actual power. The real power resides with the elected (or not in many places) politicians.

We shouldn't judge a whole circus by the performance of one clown.

I have never been impressed by Charlie-boy.
He has always been a bit of a wimp and, as mentioned already, he agreed to marry a woman who he didn't love and, consequently, never really supported her but used her solely to produce heirs - and look how one of those turned out!

I do understand the rules of primogeniture and also, at the time the rule that only a male child could become the next monarch, but in my opinion Princess Anne would have made a far better monarch, like her mother.

I am not surprised in the least that support for a monarchy is waning.  Charlie is not a good role model.

I doubt Charles had much say in how he lived his younger life.. I reckon his father controlled most of it..
I'm pleased that he is with the person whom he truly loves.
