My son has just adopted 8 "caged chickens ' ie battery hens .
They look terrible poor things .
Now they will have the good life for what time is left to them .
Their feathers will grow back and they will feel the earth beneath their feet .

The old cages we used to call 'Battery cages'   were supposed to have been banned here 14 years ago.
Nowadays it seems we call them  'Colony cages,'    for some stupid reason.

The birds will usually pick up with time and care, Muddy.    Their wings probably won't work for a while,  and their claws are probably too long,  and their combs are often pale because they've never seen sunshine,  but they should soon rally round.
I hope so,    for their sake and your son's.

My son had some. They live a long time. You can't replace individuals as they die though. They establish a pecking order and a newcomer won't be welcome then you'll find out where the phrase pecking order originated. They'll even lay quite well for quite a while and destroy any ground they have access to.

Yes,  Chickens certainly do have a strict pecking order,  and can peck a new interloper to death even.

Yes he is very kind he had another batch before ,they lived two years
Rescue chickens are culled  by commercial egg farms  at 18 months
The unnatural way of life does shorten their lifespan .
A chicken can live up to 10 years in the natural way of things if it's lucky .
When they go away we usually go and ( one must be careful how one says this ) chicken sit .
