Scrumpy

I went for a coffee this morning.
I noticed three (older) men sitting alone and one woman alone.
The men were mostly reading newspapers .. one was doing the crossword .. The woman was just looking out of the window.. None were using mobile phones..
It would seem that there are many people on there own out there...
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Yes,  as you say Scrumps,  I think there are a lot of people on their own.

Depending on where we live, there are often places to go, like day centres, where you can join in with others and chat, have a cup of tea, do gentle exercises, play games,  do puzzles, or have a meal together, etc,   but not everyone can travel to get there,  or perhaps they just don't want to.
But I don't believe everyone living like a recluse, does it from choice.  It's so sad if they are lonely.

I guess different things suit different people though.   You can't make them mix if they don't want to.
I know I missed the company and laughs I had with my work mates when I first retired.

A local charity near me also offer 'Befrienders'.  These are proper 'vetted' people who will either phone you, or I believe pop in,  and  chat and keep folks company for a while each week.
I suppose that would be a better choice for those who are too frail to get out to be with people.

I am so glad I have got my dogs.  I would be lost without their company.
I know they don't say much,  but sometimes that can be a blessing,  as they would probably only say
'When are we going out'   or  'where's my dinner.'

I met a bloke yesterday while in a waiting room .
In half an hour I knew a large amount of his life story .
Some people like to talk others don't .

That said I feel sad when people are alone and look lonely .
I know it will come to me at some point unless I shuffle off this mortal coil before Mr M and my dog .

Sometimes I'll go for a coffee in my own. I usually have a book or paper to read. I like being alone sometimes. I'm also sociable, and went out with friends yesterday. I'll be having coffee after being in the pool this morning with another group of friends.  And I see people when I'm in the charity shop.  Unless we're housebound, if we want company, we need to make some effort.

Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

Me too GM, but it's also good to know there's a meet up most weeks with "girls" from the street I grew up on and old work friends.

There used to be a bloke in the library I used to go to. He was on his own and to save on heating in winter he'd spend all day in the library, all comfy in one of the chairs ...asleep. No one bothered him. He snored a bit.
Trouble started when if he was woken up by people milling about he started mouthing off and swearing. He rather spoilt a good thing for himself.

A dying breed then?
I wonder if the kids of today will still be uploading selfies and glued to social media when they are oldies?
They just seem so self-obssessed and self-absorbed nowadays.
