Mups

I received this email this evening, supposedly from my local u3a.

This will surprise you to know,  I haven't a clue what he's on about, but I'm a bit worried because I am with Virgin.

Here is part of it,  plus a link.  Please will others have a look for me and see what you think of it?
Is it genuine even?
Thanks very much.

We have been made aware that in the near future Virgin Media will be closing down their email services and offering customers the opportunity to transfer their accounts to a company called Junara.

There is a 99p transfer fee per email inbox and customers with a current broadband, TV or landline contract will pay nothing for the first year of this new service. Those without an active Virgin Media package must sign up for a standard paid plan (apparently £59 to £65 per year per mailbox) immediately to keep their service.

This will apply to all virginmedia, Virgin.com and ntlworld email addresses, and full details can be found at https://news.virginmediao2.co.uk/helping-customers-understand-upcoming-changes-to-their-virgin-media-email-services/.

It seems vm have joined with o2 and vm may well be binning their email services so the message is genuine. If you don't use a VM email there is no problem if you do then read the details that they give you.

You registered here with an ntlworld email. You will be able to continue using it so long as you are with VM for free but if you move on it will cost an annual fee to continue according to the email.

I have a broadband account with VM and no doubt there'll have been an email I could have used, but never have.

You know my yahoo email handle which I've had for well over a decade, for free, along with a free Gmail account.

Anything that asks for money for email usage sounds dodgy to me as there are plentiful freebies out there.

My advice.... Ignore it

I had NTL before VM took over.. I don't use Virgin email.. I haven't had any notice of any change..
Like Mups, I understand little of these things..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

It's a mistake to use an ISP email. I don't think many even offer one these days.  The trap comes when you are using one and all your umpteen accounts for all sorts of things have that one registered. If the ISP goes bust or as in this instance stops providing the service or maybe you just want to switch ISP you'll have to change it on every one of those accounts which is a royal pita and sods law says you'll forget one.

Thanks for your input folks,  but I am really no wiser than when I started.

I think I will do nothing for the time being, and if there are to be changes I have no doubt Virgin will notify me in due course.  I can't afford a big price increase though, so I don't know what will happen.

I do have a gmail account as well,  but hardly ever use it.    I am wondering if that might change as well though?
