No doubt some of the more elderly members on here (no names mentioned, Mups and Scrumpy) will recall using quills to write with.  Whilst reading one of the Horatio Hornblower books, I came across this, which was a new wild fact for me...

"He reached for pen and paper, returning to the commonplace world with his routine annoyance at having a left-wing pen. Pens from the left wing of the goose were cheaper than right-wing ones, because when held in position for writing they pointed towards the writer's eye and not conveniently out over his elbow as right-wing ones did."

You're not supposed to swallow it.
I used to use it to spit at the back of the boy's head in front of me.

Real copper?.  Luxury lad.  We 'ad twig from local tree and t'cow pat to etch it into, afore leaving it in t'field to dry 'ard.

You all sound like these Yorkshiremen!

In the early fifties, we were given slates to write on at school.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

Vlad

I do remember them
