Did you know that if you own an EV you can get really low electric tariffs .
All you need is a batterie and a drive ( to charge your car ) and the rest of the house will also be on the low EV tariff .

klondike

You don't even need the car. There are lots of cheap overnight tariffs.

I wouldn't touch an EV with a bargepole.
They do tend to explode into a fire-ball, you know!

Even without the fireworks the extra insurance, upcoming pay per mile, expensive and inconvenient away from home charging and staggeringly high depreciation they are expensive to run. There's a good reason that they are falling short of the government imposed sales targets.

However if you have one the electricity is much cheaper for the rest of the house.

Which ones ?
I am with octopus and what makes up the biggest part of the bill is the standing charge .

yes so I had heard but they are developing new sodium batteries that are safer and cheaper apparently .

From AI
. Key Advantages over Lithium-IonAbundant Materials: Instead of relying on mined lithium and cobalt, sodium-ion batteries utilize widely available, conflict-free materials like common salt, wood, iron, and air.
Winter Performance: Sodium cells perform remarkably well in freezing climates. For instance, CATL's Naxtra sodium-ion batteries retain about 90% of their charge even at -40°C.Safety:
They are highly stable and significantly less prone to thermal runaway or fires when damaged.

Yes,  I have heard that on the news quite a few times now.
Another thing that can do the same is those E.Bikes apparently.

Regarding the cheaper electricity,  I bet you now,  that as we edge towards winter the prices will go up and up again, regardless of what they are telling you now.

My feeling is they are just saying all this to get more sales as these cars are not selling like they'd hoped.

I expect so .
But these cheap energy deals will create a great social divide .
For a start you need a drive in order to charge your car .
People who are in flats or town houses cannot do it .
Also people in rental properties can only put in a charger with the landlords approval .
So people who can't afford an EV and live in a home without a drive , generally the less affluent sector of society will not be able to access the cheaper tariffs .

I just see now that the government is making a scheme for channels to be cut into pavements for houses without drives so cables can be used .

God,  that seems a bit like desperation to me.

Once again it sounds like the rich looking after the rich again.
I would think more of these people if cheaper tariffs were offered to those who need help paying,  not for the ones with big houses, several cars, and big driveways.

muddy

I completely agree Mups .

I only heard about this today and wondered  how many other people do know about it .
I never understand my electricity bill as it is I suppose it's to make people change to EVs

Social tariffs
These are special tariffs for those on Universal credit .
They are for phone broadband and water .

There are no social tariffs on gas or electricity

klondike

You don't need an EV to get a cheap overnight period. There are specific tariffs designed for heat pumps, batteries with or without solar in addition to evs. It's a case of picking a tariff that suits what equipment you have. I have a small rooftop solar and battery setup and my electricity works out to be about zero as my only consumption is at night rate and I get payment for export back to the grid. If I had roofs suitable for more panels they could pay for the gas too but of course the up front cost of the equipment would be more.

I'm another one who won't have an electric car, I will keep using petrol ones till the very end.

Actually you don't need a drive.  There are public chargers in my next street, many of the houses here are terraced, no drives.   There are also chargers in local carparks.

My son in law likes his cars, and bought an electric one several years ago, he got some green energy deal as a business owner.   Put a fast charger in the garage.  He kept it for a year and then went for a hybrid.  Not sure about the latest recent one, but I know it won't be fully electric.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

muddy

The thing is Granny the public chargers are far more expensive than the EV tariff for a house .
