Quote from: klondike on July 01, 2026, 06:00:03 AMBack in those days fewer people had cars. As a consequence most lived within walking distance of their work and schools or used public transport. Only main routes were salted then as now but nobody found that a great problem. These days teachers can have problems getting to school and there is no point opening if a sizeable proportion of the staff won't be there on time.

There is some possible benefit in that there is less time for the children to be indoctrinated with woke lefty nonsense by the woke lefty teachers. Unfortunately that continues while learning to read and write suffers. That doesn't matter these days as they will still be able to go to university and get their advanced indoctrination.

The recent hot weather was a problem for most here for a  couple of linked reasons. High humidity combined with being old so less able to cope with that.

I've seen suggestions that we will be having more quite hot weather for a couple of months at least. The technical term used by metereologists for this is summer ☀️

Yes.   That makes sense.   :upvote:

Draw the curtains,  Sir.
To be fair, if my neighbours saw me walking round my house in the nip, they'd come and pull the curtains on themselves.

Schools in 2026.
"Please ensure your child brings a labelled water bottle, sun hat, SPF50 and remains hydrated"
In my day " It's hot! Don't lick the railings"

We mollycoddle the school children..
They are pretty smart.. They know that if they moan enough about anything it will be sorted.. in their favour..

We didn't take water bottles to school.. We all used the tap/water fountain in the play area..
Just imagine it.. Every kids mouth had touched the tap.. And nobody died..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

You've just reminded me of those little bottles of milk we used to have in school, the milk was quite thick in the summer Yuk !

That milk was vile, it made me feel sick. I kept telling my witch of a teacher but she didn't believe me and made me drink it. Untill one day I was sick, all over her shoes. Funny how she didn't make me drink the stuff after that. I still detest milk on it's own.  :busted:

It was awful, curdled and sour tasting, nice in winter though

I recall the term "Thatcher the milk snatcher" after she stopped it. I think when she was education secretary but cba to check.

I only vaguely remember it so it couldn't have been bad at the schools I attended.

The Janny used to deliver the crates to all the classrooms early on and always dumped the crate in front of the radiator, helped to curdle it.  :ugh:

LOL - no - I wouldn't know how.  I stole it from a friend's email, just for you - but don't tell anyone!
