Ministers want 60% of children walking or cycling to school by 2035. What planet are these idiots on? Presumably the assumption is that currently less than 60% so do. surely, that being the case parents have decided that they do not want their children to walk or cycle. This should b their decision not some diktat from some Westminster clown

Mups

We always had to walk to school when we were kids,   but it was probably a lot safer for children to be out on their own in those days.

I agree with you though Michael,  that it should be the parents decision though.   It would also depend on how far away the school was too.

Whatever next ?  This bloody government is unbelievable.

I bet the Minister's who decide these things don't let their kids walk to school!

I bet so too .
It's dangerous out there for children .
The roads are much busier and there are in some places hordes of unsafe men hanging about .
And lots of children still do walk to school .

The more I think about this stupid idea, the angrier I get. For a start how can it be monitored and enforced. If it happens one inevitable result will be more children involved in traffic accidents, especially in winter. If it results in the death or injury of just one child it will be a national disgrace.

Scrumpy

I wouldn't let any of my children/grandchildren walk to school .. far too dangerous out there..
Children can learn road sense.. Drivers be more aware..
But there is something more sinister out there ...something a child can not deal with.. Something we didn't have to worry about back then..
Mum used to say ' Don't talk to strangers' and that seemed to be enough to scare the daylights out of us kids..
I don't recall me or any of my mates being approached by a 'stranger'....
We used to walk through the park to go to school.. Through 'The Hedges'  which was a cutting .. fields either side with horses in.. Sometimes alone.. Never once were we afraid to do so..

Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

sadly, it's a different world now
