The manager of our local waitrose looks about 18 years old !
I expect he's not but he is young .
They don't have a security man at all .

Free, in fact, if you have the nerve just to walk out with them!

Our local Waitrose doesn't have a security guard ..
Are security guards allowed to put their hands on a suspected shop lifter. ?
I have seen security guards at Tesco and Sainsbury's..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Quote from: Ashy on April 07, 2026, 09:50:46 AMI can foresee shops going back to this type of shop with a counter, or in some places, selling out of a little window like an American highway liquor store.
Works for low volume high value items e.g. jewelers. Greengrocers can often manage that way too with relatively cheap produce. Supermarkets already do it for some with their delivery services. I think we have just got used the the supermarket way of doing things. They doubtless price in losses.

I feel sorry for the staff
Shame on Waitrose.
What has the UK come to, when morally correct action on the part of an individual is deemed wrong?
The man was right in tackling the thief .
Let's go biblical

Thou shall not steal .

It's simple enough .

I am sure they do and to the detriment of the innocent shoppers .
They put prices up .

Yes,  that would deter shoplifters,  but it wouldn't stop someone with a weapon (a gun for example),  making a staff member open the glass doors and put trays of rings on the counter to pinch.

Nobody suggested it would. It was suggested that returning to counter service might deter shoplifters not robbers.

Truth is there are plenty of ways to steal from any shop but it seems to be shoplifting that is skyrocketing and some retailers are actively discouraging staff from stopping it.

The alcohol is behind glass in Morrisons, you have to ask for assistance.  My question is, once the assistant has taken a bottle of booze from the glass cupboard and the customer puts the bottle in her trolley, what's to stop said bottle disappearing into a bag in the bakery or pet food aisle ?

I see this overt shoplifting as just another way, along with mass illegal immigration, that this country is sinking.  Give everything away to others for no advantage to the owners.  Even our own country.

I have just been watching a news report and discussion on GB News re. illegal immigration.  One of the do-gooders was trying to explain that we cannot legally stop them coming across the Channel.  Strangely, we managed to stop the Nazis doing the same thing!  It all seems to be about being nice and accepting things which are of absolutely no benefit to our country.
They also discussed the use of a foreign country, as has been discussed much earlier, regarding a place in Africa, where we could deport all illegal arrivals, and which would have cost far less than keeping all the criminals in four-star hotels or even much cheaper accommodation, though this was also disagreed with by the do-gooders.

The owner of Iceland has offered the man a job!  And people have been raising money to help him.

Good for Iceland.  Waitrose, I hope you experience an army of shoplifters.  It's what you deserve.

The reason the do gooders say we can't stop them is that for some reason they say it is against international law. Even if it were in some treaty or other which I seriously doubt we could simply withdraw from the treaty. Even if we didn't just who is going to enforce that law. If we decided to erect a gallows on the dock at Dover and proceeded to publicly hang all those we had picked up just who exactly is going to do anything about it apart from some hurty words.

There is no such thing as international law. Just what was legal about Trumps action against Iran? It was no more legal than the Ayatollahs executing their protestors. Possibly less so as they could at least claim the protestors had broken some national law for which the punishment was death.

We take the dingy boys in because our political leaders are virtue signalling plain and simple
