Politicians pay themselves a lot of our money and it attracts the wrong people. Even councillors get paid these days. The european union pays astronomical money and that is (imho) why some politicians are in favour of membership.

Against that we have the concept of departmental budgets. If they don't spend their entire allocation. next year they get less, so there is no incentive to save money, in fact their incentive is to overspend, and at this time of the year, if there is anything left over, they waste it.

My Grandad was on the Perth Town Council back in the 50s. None of them were paid, and they all had their day jobs.

The revolting trophy hunters who kill wild animals for fun,  have now brought back Elephant tusks from one of the most endangered herds in Zambia.

Also they have brought back parts of critically endangered Black Rhino,   plus  'canned Lions' - Lions that   have been bred in captivity, then turned out into fenced fields so escape is impossible,  just for the vile trophy hunters to enjoy shooting them and removing body parts to brag about.

Hippo's, Leopards, Zebras, Wolves and even a Baboon have also been targeted.

This is something else the Labour government promised to put an end to.
They now say:

"The government has committed to introduce a ban on the import of hunting trophies from species of conservation concern.    We are considering all options."

After all this time,  they are still "considering all options"??

Yet another broken promise just to gain votes -  and it worked.

That's how I feel, too.

It's a very strange mental condition. The folk who pander to it are really no better either. Certainly anything coming back needs stopping although they'd probably make do with photos of their "achievements" and they would be impossible to keep out. I hope that they are kept under some sort of observation when they return as they are clearly potentially very dangerous people.

I don't think it's "normal" cruelty. It seems to me to be psychopathic - zero empathy - no conscience - just nothing.

It used to be worse of course. Animal cruelty in years gone by (and some places still) was disgusting with cock fighting, dog fighting, hare coursing, bear baiting and of course bull fighting etc.

One thing I read which shocked me that the reason clay pigeons - small flat saucers of clay mechanically slung through the air as targets for shooters - are called that because the Victorians used to release captive birds as targets.

There is also still game shooting (mostly but not exclusively on big estates) where pheasants and sometimes other birds specially bred for the purpose are released for (mostly toffs and royalty) to bang away at.

I think the deer shooting that happens is to a large degree to maintain the health of the herds and make sure that there aren't so many that many would starve but don't doubt that there is still a lot of hunting because they enjoy hunting.

I am afraid to say in some parts of Spain they still release live pigeons to be shot .
Pheasants are bred for shooting all over the U.K.
it's a very lucrative bussiness .
The poor things they are not very bright and get shot easily .
Deer are best shot for culling purposes .
Hunting them with dogs was unspeakably cruel .
