I was thinking more of grandchildren.  It wasn't as tough for their parents as it is now.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

Grandchildren need help.. Most of our children have made it.. They have homes..
My granddaughter Martha was only able to buy a house because her Father died and left a large insurance cover..  He was very young..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Sad reason Scrumpy.  I agree its the young ones in their teens and twenties who could do with help.  My kids, rather my middle aged offspring, are well set up.

Accents can vary a little over tiny distances or at least some words can.

I moved to Rubgy from Northampton for a while which is around 20 miles. Scrumpy's tale of problems with her lawn reminded me that in Northampton grass has a long A while in Rugby it's a short A and the two sound like different words.

Different thread?

People in the same town or city can have different accents.  Two famous Sheffielders who don't sound alike, Sean Bean and Michael Palin.

Too many late nights... Muddled brain..
Bed by 7pm for you tonight...

I use the phone to post in bed. Probably fat fingers as much as a fat head. I'd likely read through, moved on, thought of a comment and fat fingered into here.

Quote from: klondike on January 28, 2026, 10:09:28 AMThose wanting to buy won't have a deposit for years. Apparently staying home with mummy and daddy til 30 odd isn't that unusual.

Lots do but it's not their fault if they can't afford to move out.
People do all sorts of things just to get social housing .
If a minor gets "kicked out' by his family he will get put up by the council .
At 18 he will be eligible for social housing at some point.
Whereas if he has a home with his parents that's where he will have to stay .

That used to be the case more than nowadays, due to the shortage of social housing.  A hostel then a room in an HMO is more likely now.  Having a baby also used to be a passport to council housing, lots of families in temporary accommodation wait a long time, especially in London and the SE.

The policy of needs first is IMO unfair to people who have been on the waiting list for a long time .

Quote from: Mups on January 27, 2026, 08:46:49 PMI wonder how these unrealistic house prices can be justified?
I mean,  what's changed?  A house is still the same bricks and mortar,  garden size,  driveway,  etc that it always was,  so why such ridiculous  price increases?
And even many posher areas that were,  are no longer as desirable as they were years ago, with many new-builds swamping every bit of greenery there was.

These big estates of very expensive new houses are soul destroying .
No character and postage sized gardens .
They have small green spaces but manicured and unnatural .
We used to roam the woods and fields as children climbing  trees and othe dangerous pursuits .
What do children do now ?
