For anyone who hasn't yet worked it out, it's nothing to do with speeding up trials, it's designed to stop a jury acquitting a person who pleads not guilty after being charged with posting comments on Facebook after an illegal immigrant rapes a schoolgirl.

Lammy proposed it, so we know it's a terrible idea.

Of course it is.  You'd imagine that Labour already has a number of lefty judges who would decide in favour of their favourite political party.
When they successfully manage to stop the use of juries for all but the most serious crimes, they can rely on their own left judges to make the 'right' decisions.
We'll be back in mediaeval days and, having seen films like Robin Hood, we're going to see some strong reactions, hopefully starting with the 'Sheriff of Westminster', who definitely needs his head removing.

correct analysis by Diasi. Although our court system is notoriously slow, if they need more courts they can get more juries, we have plenty of spare people, and since they raised the pension age they can raise the upper age limit etc. so there is  no way an argument holds water.

No my friends this has come down from the world government in exile along with digital identity, cashless transactions, facial recognition. 15 minute cities and everything else that the control freaks can dream about.

If courts were opened for longer hours and judges got off their arses at the weekend, the backlog would soon be cleared.

Yes, I'm sure there is an increasing backlog when it comes to trials.  Perhaps this is exacerbated by the number of short prison sentences which allow career criminals to serve a pathetically short sentence, which has little or no deterrence, and then can be straight back into their chosen 'profession'.

To maintain a standard of being a civilised nation, I believe that more severe sentences should be handed down, and either more prisons or more harsh prison situations should be put in place, especially the latter in my opinion.  This, as I have said before, should include hanging for murder.
