I've got a small one of these,  that I use in a corner of my kitchen when it is very cold - like now.

My question is,  does anyone know how long these live?    Can the oil solidify or anything?
I have just raked it out the airing cupboard,  but I haven't used it since last winter,  so just wondered how to tell if its safe to use.
I would think it must be about 5 or 6 yrs old now.

Nothing to go wrong really. They are sealed for life.  Only down side is that electricity costs a lot more than gas per kWh.

I've got a little one by my knees right now ! but I didn't realise they were more expensive to run than gas.

Gas is 5p to 6p per kWh. Electric is north of 20p. Usually quite a bit north.

But if you run your CH it heats up more than the little area an electric heater will cover so will be using more kw per hour than the little oil filled rad does.
