It is widely expected that the wretched Reeves woman will introduce a 3p per mile charge on EVs (although how it can be effectively enforced is beyond me), and there is now the possibility that she will introduce it for ALL mileage including abroad! So, if you pop across La Manche and nip down to wherever, not only will you be faced with French tolls, but also Reeves banditry!

Easy.  Mileage records every year.  If new, could be done at the first MoT.

Not that I'm supporting it, of course.

Hadn't thought of that. As you say, easy. What caused the brain fade was remembering this being advocated a few years ago with different rates for different sorts of road

How many miles do people drive? Until I lost Veronica I averaged around 10-12,000 a year, so someone doing that sort of mileage in an EV would be looking at over £300 a year on top of all other costs

Fuel duty costs more than 3p a mile....

Ashy

Taxes make up 63p per litre which is £3 a gallon, if we get 23-25 mpg makes about 12.5p a mile tax on a small petrol car.

I know - it's just that anyone gullible enough to follow government advice and buy a overpriced vacuum cleaner now finds an additional cost they weren't expecting

Has anyone managed to work out the equivalent price increase this would be if it were a standard (home) electricity tariff

klondike

Well as the original price per mile was zero to start with the percentage increase is infinite but if you are talking about increase over the typical home charge price that depends on tariff and car efficiency.

Let's go with some ballpark figures.

Quick search brings up an EV tariff with 7p per kWh overnight.
Miles per kWh varies wildly depending on car and weather but 3 mpkwh is a decent number I think.

So adding 3p per mile is about doubling the cost of fuel per mile

That's all pretty irrelevant though as mid range EV is going to cost £40k new and be worth about £15k if you can find anybody to buy it after 3 years
