Anybody get one this afternoon? Shortly after I got in I noticed my internet was down. I thought it would be the new router I bought a few days ago then found my phone internet was out too. As the internet is Vodafone branded and the Lebara SIM I use is based on Vodafone I guessed it must be them. After an hour I thought I'd call as the phone service was still up and found that they had taken the line down.

Big enough outage to make the national news I see now mine is working again.

It was more annoying because I had no way of finding anything out about it. I'd forgotten how dependent I'd become on the internet for news or information on anything.

These things would not be important but they could deprive you of a service or access to your bank. If the government gets its rotten way with digital identity, it could deprive you of absolutely everything. And if they did away with cash you couldn't have any sort of back-up.

A while ago I wanted access to my on-line banking to make an urgent transfer. Their system required a code sent by SMS but it didn't work so access was denied, due they said afterwards to a failure of their telecoms provider. (They have no alternative system.)

Then I wanted access to my Google account and it didn't recognise my password. They sent out an access code (several times) by e-mail but it arrived hours after it had expired.

Far from being infallible these computer systems are totally fallible and we should never place complete trust in them.

Certainly shouldn't but for a lot of things we have little choice. For all I knew at the time London could have been nuked. I don't have any TV that works without internet and the only radios I use all have inbuilt batteries which were flat.

Good points.  We are reliant on t'internet for our computers, telly, and phones - all forms of communication (other than shouting).
Our telly does still have an aerial connection, but we don't use it now.  I suppose that if everything else failed, we could still do so.  It's just a matter of changing the general setting, as it's all still plugged in.
I'm sure that if we did that, there would be an immediate power cut.

I removed the aerial and satellite dish cables when I cancelled the TV licence. I even removed all the TV apps from the smart display main page although they could be added back if needs be. My real mistake was having Vodafone as the base provider of internet and phone. Can't be helped as I'm not going to get a second SIM just in case and I'm happy with Lebara. I did swap to Lyca and had to swap back as for some reason there were intermittent problems with texts which many places insist on sending magic numbers to whenever you log in.
