It appears that the British government in 1966 (H. Wilson prop.) made a treaty regarding the Chagos Islands and Diego Garcia which prevents said government from disposing of the islands. Now whilst I can vaguely remember Harold Wilson and 1966, and Horace Cutler throwing his wellington boots, I had no idea about the Chagos Islands. But the civil service is supposed to advise the government about these things and that includes the previous administration. Some pretty expensive lawyers have made a lot of money out of the negotiations so not all bad news eh?
