And me.  The chap across the road gave up driving last year, and his wife can't drive. They fortunately have a daughter and her family nearby, with cars. There are also local shops, and reasonable public transport, but it's still a blow.

Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 you can get back in the driving seat Mike.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

certainly hope so. I have weekly deliveries from Tesco and Wiltshire Farm Foods,  so I won't starve, but if unablee to drive, lving where I do, even if my legs recover, I will be virtually house bound

Make sure that you have breakdown cover in case the scooter develops
a fault when out, or a puncture.  If I had a scooter I would also take out insurance even though it isn't mandatory at present. You have choices of lead acid batteries or
lithium too on many makes. Lithium takes up less room.
Some makes have the speed control like a motor bike twist grip, others don't.

good advice - thanks, I will follow it. Been having a look at scooters 'just in case' and loved the display on of them. It has a rotating knob on the 'dash' for adjusting speed. At the slow end, there is a silhouette of a tortoise, at the fast end of a hare!

One thing I omitted to say was there are many scooter types on Facebook
where owners discuss problems/best buys etc . You can join and ask questions.
This one is for Green Power make.......

Quote from: Michael Rolls on June 13, 2025, 06:37:32 PManybody got one? Reason that I ask that my driving licence expires 28/7/25 and I have received a medical questionnaire from DVLA. Three years ago the questionnaire  ran to four pages, easily answered. This time it is ten pages and asks questions to which I don't know the answer - they will to take it up with Ninewells (the reason for the medical questionnaire is that I have a pacemaker fitted, Went in in 1978 and no problems since). Given this governments hatred of the elderly, I have an uneasy feeling that they may decline to renew, which round here is an awful prospect.
So, I have been looking at mobility scooters, just in case. Bewildering range, from a lightweight golf buggy thing, to a Harley Davidson look alike and wonder if anyone had gen to pass on -for instance, do they need to be insured? (looking at some of them, if they don't have to be insured, they damn well ought to be!)
I know nothing about them but I think they are a  good idea .
Anything that keeps people mobile and getting out and about is good .

just about - the Careco Ranger - a Which best buy is substantial and very  well equipped. That, of course, is Plan B. Plan A is my licence gets renewed, but if it doesn't, I will sell both cars, buy the scooter and a small car which, whilst I won't be able to drive it, will be here for Mary, my s-i-l, and Niall, my stepson, when they come up so that they are mobile.

Sounds good Michael.
I hope it all turns out well for you, whatever you do in the end.

Would you be able to tax it? To do so requires insurance and to get insurance requires a licence. Plus it would be cheaper to hire one as and when.

That's true.  Sorry,  I hadn't thought of that.
