Helicopter crash in USA

In the USA,  helicopter has crashed into the Hudson River.   6 people dead, including 3 children.
Apparently a rotor broke off.

That's something that really should never happen with proper maintenance.

You'd think so.  But chaos / catastrophe theory would suggest that there's always a possibility of a random malfunction.

True enough but helicopters in particular need regular preventive maintenance and regular careful inspection. They glide like a brick when things go wrong with low survivability.

I did that helicopter ride years ago.  It was scary, but once up in the air you forget about the fear !

Me too, Alex.   But unlike you,  I didn't find it any less scary once I was up there. 
I wouldn't do it again.

They are saying today that the main rotor and also the tail came off.
I wonder what on earth caused that to happen?

All 6 six people on board were killed.  The three children were 4, 5, and 11, I believe.

It depends how high and how violently it span and bucked when it started to disintegrate I suppose.

I saw the clip of it falling.  It looks a right mangled mess.  I hope they were knocked unconscious when it first disintegrated.

Very sad, I believe 5 were Spanish tourists plus the pilot.

We don't expect these things in the 21st century do we? And yet here we are, apparently the whole mechanical gubbins broke apart with out warning. Once the tail breaks in a helicopter you have almost no chance.

There was another plane crash on Friday in Florida, 3 people were  killed.
