I was toying with the idea of getting a security camera and a doorbell (Tapi seem a good make), out of boredom more than anything.

Not really keen on signing up for a subscription though.  So, will rely on SD card memory.

It occurred to me that if someone nicked the camera and/or doorbell, then the SD card will obviously be nicked with it, therefore along with the info needed regarding who carried out the dastardly deed.

Sooooh, is there such a thing as a Wi-Fi SD card, with a card to slot into the, er, slot within the camera and the actual memory card/device being elsewhere and thus not quite so nickable?

Or, and please keep it very simple so my cat can understand it, is there another way of doing this other than using the cloud service?

Alex

I've got a Blink door bell and the "thinggy" sits on the floor in my hall, plugged in of course.

dextrous63

Is that where the SD card is held and not in the bell button?

Alex

Yes the card is inside the little box.

dextrous63

Excellent. That's the doorbell sorted then.  Ta.

Just had a look at the camera (for the garden), and the sd card is within camera housing.  Pity it's not in a separate hub too!!

Alex

I didn't know that, at the moment I've only got the bell but waiting for my lad to sort out a camera to go with it..

Apparently, you can see outside camera view on Alexa  - no idea how that works though !

I had a non-Ring doorbell because it needed no sub. I think there was a screen in the house and it recorded there but can't be sure. I know it wasn't much cop though and just got a Ring camera in the end as that lets you talk to callers regardless of if you are home or not.

Does it require a sub to enable this facility?

klondike

Yes. I looked it up and it's £49.99 a year. I'd prefer to avoid that but don't see any alternative that does the same thing.

I can talk to  people outside on mine, I don't pay any subscription.   My only problem is by the time I get my mobile out of my handbag, they've usually gone.

Excellent news.  Thanks.

Amazon, here I come with my trusty Mastercard...

Is that from anywhere or only from within range of your own WiFi?

Ah I see from the specs that you can. That looks very good. I'll check when my Ring subscription runs out and replace it if the kit needed isn't more than a couple of years subscription.

Problem now is to figure out that Ring subscription. I think I got the doorbell during an Amazon Black Friday sale so may have already renewed for best part of a year.

Bugger

We're letting you know that your yearly Ring Home Basic subscription will renew on December 22, 2024

Looks like I can cancel and get a pro rated refund. Excellent. I'll explore what kit I need and the cost tomorrow.

Cheers Alex.

I do think it went off in the queue at Aldi     I need to buy a screen to keep in the kitchen so I can see straight away who is at the door !

Last night Royal Mail delivered a parcel at 9pm.  I didn't hear the bell or my phone, but did hear a noise outside.  The postman had moved my bin right next to the front door and had hidden the parcel next to it !  Kind of him I thought, he could have just left it on the step.

When I eventually got my phone out I played it back on ' clips' and saw him moving my bin !
